Crib Dilemma-Would love your opionions
« on: July 18, 2006, 02:55:20 am »
Hi All,

We will be moving overseas in March of next year. DD #2 will be 15 months when we move. We will ship all of our furniture and it will arrive a few months after our move. That will make DD around 18 months when we get our funiture. We plan to check our pack and play as a bag, so we will have that with us when we arrive at our new home. Here is the dilemma---Since DD will be close to 18 months by the time our funiture arrives, should I even bother with packing the regular crib?? Should we just use the pack and play and then transition to a big bed when our funiture arrives?  What would all of you do?

Thanks!!!  :)

To be honest I have no intention of moving dd until I absolutely have to which hopefully wont be anytime soon. We will also prob move house and will def leave her in her crib through all of that. I think the move in itself will be a big change/upheaveful so it might be nice to have the comfort of your own bed when you get there.

I think it depends on your LO. Ella moved into a big bed at around that time - always been an angel sleeper, never got out or had any problems at all. Jack was 2 in March and is still in his cot!!! He's very spirited and someitmes takes a long time to go to sleep - whilst he is quite happy in his cot if he was in a bed he'd be up and down like a yo yo!! I keep joking with dh that i'll move him to a bed once he's fallen out of the cot 3 times (JOKE - and no, he's never fallen out!) I'm not moving him any time soon!!

I am a bit unqualified to answer (but when has that ever stopped me from posting  ;)), since DS is not even a year yet, but I think if your LO is going to be sleeping in her pack-n-play for a couple of months at the new place until your furniture arrives, then you might as well just transition her from the pack-n-play to a bed. Rather than pack-n-play to crib to bed.

I think you have to play that one by ear but I would ship the crib and if you use it great, if not hopefully it hasn't cost too much to ship with your other furniture.  I think the general advice is to try to keep them in the crib until at least 2.5 years unless you need it for another lo or if the crib is too small (big toddler or restless sleeper) so that they can understand the sleep rules better and stay in their beds.  So at 18 months you would typically want to use the crib for another year but I think that depends a lot on temperment and how "good" a sleeper he is.

You may want to consider adding somethings to the pack and play to make it more comfortable and start putting him to sleep in there--at least for naps--to get him use to sleeping in it on a regular basis before you move.

Thanks ladies for your replies. I think we have decided to keep DD in the crib for a while after our move. She is already a climber, so I know we will have trouble keeping her in a toddler bed. I have some ladies scouting the stores for baby cribs, so we can have one when we arrive. That way we don't have to get her used to the pack and play and then used to the crib again.

Thanks again!  ;D
