new to bottles, how do you do it at night?
« on: July 18, 2006, 18:49:03 pm »
I've just started giving dd a bottle for her middle of the night feed. I wanted to find out how much she was taking (downed a whole 5oz little bottle and would have drunk more had it been there) with the idea that I'll start diluting as an attempt to get rid of the feed. I had the formula ready measured out in a bottle, a thermos of hot water, and a bottle of cold water and mixed when she woke in the night. Is there an easier way?? Should I give her a 6 oz feed even though she settled fine after 5oz?

TIA
Katie

Great question!  I'll be watching this for replies!

With ds #1, we took him downstairs to the main floor to get a bottle from the fridge, warm it, and fed him on the couch while we watched TV.  Obviously, I believe this caused us a few sleep issues! ::)

So for this baby, I am determined not to leave it's room for middle of the night feeding's.  My current plan, and it sounds like a bit of a pain, is to have a little cooler that plugs into a normal outlet (we already have one) and put nightly bottles in it.  We have a bottle warmer in the room, warm the bottles, and feed the baby.

can you eliminate it altogether if you tank her up or dream feed her rather than feed her in the middle of the night?
my lo is on bottles and has been for a few months (back to work) but I've never fed her when she woke in the middle of the night.  :-\
I think if you are going to do that, your way doesn't sound too complicated. I've often nuked the water (shaken the bottle really well after to get rid of hot spots) when I've been in a pinch...I use bottled water..

We put water in the bottle and the premeasured formula in a separate packet and just mix and shake when needed! It's not warmed but none of her bottles ever have been and she doesn't mind them room temperature.

OK you  could try adding say 3oz of formula to 5 or 6 oz water and gradually take away milk all toghter.it worked for me.

I personally only ever gave Calum over 3 or 4oz at night and as soon as I realised he was waking out of habit (taking 20min to take an oz) I started watering them down and he stopped waking (based on my sleepy memory when he was 5 months :P)

Like lola suggests is there anyway you can tank up at night or introduce the DF as a temp measure until you can increase her intake during the day.

What solids are you currently offering? How much milk per day does she get?

....must go Calum not a happy bunny his room is 29oc  :o

thanks for all the replies!

DF caused more night wakings than we had already, worked hard to get rid of it and I'm not going to start it again!!!! Lisi doesn't wake at the same time every night - it's between 1 and 4.30, and she is hungry. During the day she gets 4 bf, so I couldn't tell you how much, not as much as it used to be, that's for sure! I smuggle milk into the cereal I give her too. Solids are a bit limited - I'm allergy ridden so she's dairy, gluten, soy, egg, fish etc etc free at least until she's 1 as a precaution. Mostly eats cereals, fruit, veg, lentils and a bit of meat. We're working on that one.

Tonight I'll try 4 scoops in the little bottle, should be 6. Will try that for a few days, and am going to see if she takes it at room temp, but not risking that in the middle of the night for the first time!

Wish me luck!
Katie

Was going to say go with room temp too, only ever gave them to dd from day 1. Had bottle of water ready and required scoops in another bottle, just poured one to other and shakey shakey shake  :)

From the beginning i've only used room temp water for my DS bottles and adding the formula just before he needs it.  So no heating issues in the middle of the night (and no adverse affects from room temp feeds).  I have the powder in one of the avent powder dispensers at night so i just tip it into the bottle.
