At what age do babies learn to go to sleep on their own?
« on: July 26, 2006, 23:58:30 pm »
Just wondering about when babies usually stop needing intervention for naps. My little one so far is ok for the bedtime one for the most part. Sometimes I have to sh/pat but not all the time. Certainly naps during the day I need to do lots of intervention otherwise she would be up all day I swear.

well i guess it depends on every baby, with my DS it could take from 45min to an hr of pat-shushing just to get him to settle, he was at his worts from4WO till9WO, then at 9WO his need for the pat-shush decreased, and then at 12WO just out of the blue, he stopped needing it completely, to the point when i can put him in the crib and leave the room ;D

Yes you are not the only one I was actually wondering the same thing! My lo is almost 4 months old and he still needs to be bounced for about 5-10 minutes before nap time... But bed time i just stick him in bed and he usually is out ! Someday they will do it at naptime!! :)

Well, I asked this question about 2 months ago and estherofi20 told me the same thing ... and I have to tell you it works.

I was patting my daughter's back for 10 - 45 minutes (I remember how much my back ached!) .. and nowadays I close her curtain, put her CD on, hold her & rub her back for a few minutes, tell her its nap time and put her down.  She goes to sleep anywhere between 5 - 10 minutes.

I'm not as diligent at bedtime tho .. only because I'm reading to her and rocking. I end up rocking her to sleep and then putting her in the crib.  I'm not too stressed about this because I love looking at her when she's falling asleep at night and I know she knows how to go to sleep on her own (she does it all day for naps).

So, yes  .. hang in there.  It will happen.    ;)

Ok I am holding you guys to this!  :) My LO knows that I am preparing her for nap time as she start to cry as I enter her room which is darkened and start the soft music and swaddle her. She does not want to go to sleep. But it doesn't take her anytime to drift off once she stops crying, which really only lasts about 5 - 10 minutes. I just dread getting her ready for naps... I know it could be a lot worse. I guess I just don't understand why she cries. I have tried nabbing her when she looks sleepy, that's worse and then I have waited an extra half hour (so awake time is 2 hrs) and although a little better, not great. She slept last night for 12 hrs though! And she is only 15 weeks... so I guess I shouldn't be really complaining.

Here is what we've been doing for the most part...

6:00 wake and feed
8:15 - asleep (30-45 min)
9 wake and feed
11 - asleep (30-45 min)
12  feed
2 asleep (30-45 min)
3 feed
5:00 nap (this one is hard to get and sometimes after 20 min or so I give up and go right into the bedtime routine which is wind down, bath, feed and in bed by 6:30-7

In addition to the short naps perhaps she doesn't require longer because she is getting almost 12 hrs at night? Is it also possible that the reason she cries when going down for a nap is because she can stay up longer? Help!

Another note as far as putting her down, I have only tried a couple of times to put her in her crib, setting the scene, swaddling etc., and she only ended up crying. Is it too soon to let her do this on her own? I don't believe in letting her cry it out either so I would jsut assume hold her, shushing her to a calm and then letting her drift off. It only takes about 5-10 min on a good day.  :)

I think that she is acctually crying 'cause she is a bit overtired, i think 2 hrs of awake time for one such little is too much, when do you start the wind down, i would recommend you start at the first yawn. 'cause if she didn't need it she would be a happy chap, KWIM? but is she is crying she does need it. but that's is MHO

well I thought that might be the case but I went through 3 weeks of nabbing her at the first yawn and she was not ahappy camper going for her nap at all. She is a very pleasant baby which is great even if she is taking short naps and all. So that is why i extended the "awake" time.... sigh... I'm at a loss.
