Is this a sleeping or an eating problem?
« on: July 28, 2006, 15:44:40 pm »
Hi.  Ds is 11 weeks old and about 12 pounds.  He is on Prilosec for reflux.  Zoey graciously helped me get my 45 minute  naps extended but I have a few other general questions about his schedule that I hope you can help me with.

First, I want to know when and how to wean the swaddle.  Ds is sucking on his hands during the day and desperately wants to suck when falling asleep but won't take a paci.  My shoulder is soaking wet after his windown routine.  And when he wakes he makes sucking noises and tries to suck on the sheets.  (he is on his belly for his reflux).  Is it time to try and how do I do it?

He is on a 3 hour EASY, but wakes frequently at night and doesn't seem to be eating too well during the day.  He is bf every 3 hours and now that his naps are straightened out, he sometimes goes 3.5 hours.  The issues I have are that he only eats for a short period of time.  I thought maybe he was just an efficient eater b/c he is gaining weight well but yesterday I had a doctor's appointment and I pumped a bottle and he only ate 2 ounces which my  mom had to force him to take.  He also only takes 3 ounces at his df.  This was after she woke him up from his nap so it was more like 3.5 hours since he ate.

Since his naps have been straightened out (for the most part), he goes down for his first nap at 8:30, then he either wakes at 10 of I wake him by 10:15, and he follows a 3 to 3.5 hour schedule.  If he sleeps longer then 1.5 hours ( and I never let him go longer then 2) his last nap ends around 4:30 and he takes a catnap from 6 to 6:30.  Here is where my problems start.  He eats at 4:30, takes a catnap, and then I try not to feed him until after his bath, but he seems cries and is frantic until I feed him, so I feed him at 6:30, give him his bath around 7 and put him to bed at 8.  If I don't top him off before I put him down, he tends to wake before his df at 10:30.  (usually around 10 so we end up giving him his df then (which is formula).  Whether I do or I don't feed him right before he goes to bed, he still has never taken more then 4 ounces.  The he wakes up 3 hours later, so at 1 am and 4 am.  Sometimes he eats a full feed at the 1 am and then not the 4 am and sometimes he barely eats at either of them.  If I try to put him back to sleep without feeding him, he always wakes up again within the hour.  Then, after his 4 am feed, he is very restless and never seems to go back to sleep completely.  I hear him making all kinds of noise or he starts crying at 6 and I have to go get him and put him back to sleep.

Any suggestions about what I can do?

Thanks, Kim

hi Kim,

i think this is more of a feeding problem.... would you like this moved to Bottle or Breast feeding?

I think breast feeding, since he only gets one bottle at the df.
Thanks!

I don't really have much advice but just wanted to reasure you a bit.  My baby also has refulx and can only manage 3 to 4 oz most feeds (he is bottle fed), he simply cannot handle much because of the reflux, therefore even at night  he is still waking 3 hourly for feeds.

DS#1 had reflux when he was a baby and did grow out of it at which time his feeding got a lot better, so I know there is light at the end of the tunnel

Hi, Looks like we are in the same boat.  Both of us with 2 boys around the same age and both with reflux!  :'(
DS#1 was always a voracious eater though so I never had this issue.  He would eat forever if I let him (and still does).
Yesterday I spaced his feeds out to 3.5 hours and he ate  much better.  He also only woke up once after the df.  Maybe a coincidence, we will see tonight.
Ironically I finally gave into dh and let him feed him all last night.  And it ended up being only once!  Why couldn't he do that on one of my nights?

Thanks for your support!
Kim

My LO had problems with reflux starting at about 4-6 weeks and was on Zantac until about 9 months (yea...outgrew it!). He also had Milk Protein Soy Intolerance...and the reflux improved greatly with cutting milk products out. Here's some tips

I used the "upright/sitting" position when he was really fussy and it worked for us. Sleep issues were a big deal for us also.

I had something similar on the sleep board b/c I wasn't sure if it was an eating or a sleeping problem but originally no one answered it and then they moved it to the bf board.  Sorry, didin't know how to move it :-[
Thanks for your input!  I am trying to spread out his feeds when I can so he eats more and concentrate on letting him eat for longer instead of stopping when he is disinterested.

Thanks again!
