45 min nap help to continue
« on: August 02, 2006, 05:21:17 am »
Hi there,

DS is exactly 4 month tomorrow. About 10 days ago, he started waking up at the 45 mins mark, and need help in order to go to the next 45 mins.

I put him down in the cot awake, he settles himself by rolling his head from side to side, so no props etc.
What I have tried:
- wait until he is really cryig and cant send him off before I go in (which is every nap now), eventually ending up with Pu/PD
- go in just when I have heard him and pat or placed a firm hand, then he drift off quietly to the next 45 mins.

I have tried to see if swaddling plays a part, but he would cry still swaddled or not.

Routine wise:
I am in the process of moving him along to 3.5 hours EASY from 3 hoping to get him to 4 by 5 month, so our routine is a as the 3.5 hr EASY give or take 1/2. (The tricky bit about moving things along is that he falls asleep at 1.5 hr on the dot!)

Do I just have to wait this out?

Hey thanks AJs mum

Didn't occur to me to try on naps, keep thinking that is something for night wakings.
I will try tomorrow. I really have to resolve this as I have a 21 month toddler and I dont always have a chance to PU/PD or pat him 'quiety' all the time. When I dont, he ends up with 1/2 a nap. Tomorrow is my last day of being toddler free to do the transition. *fingers crossed*

W2S could help but at 4 months he made need longer A times too - 1.5 hours may be too little for him - can you extend to 1.75? Carry him around, sing songs, etc for the last bit if necessary - the longer A times, combined with W2S should hopefully help thing!

It worked! :) :) :) YAY

I tired W2S today at 30 min and he slept for another 1 hr, so almost 2 hours all up, where I had to wake him up else he wont get his feed.
How many naps/days do I have to W2S before I break his habit?

I know 1.5 is not the ideal A time, but he literally falls asleep on the dot! I have noticed he has always been a bit 'sleepier' than average for his age ;) He was doing 2 hours when he was suppose to be doing 1.5 and I have only managed this extentsion about 2 weeks ago...hmmm starting to think about, around the smae time he does the 45 mins nap. Wonder which one came first, the extending the A causing the 45 min nap or vice versa :-\
Either way, I have put it down to DS being a bit 'slow' in the awake time department.

I've done wake 2 sleep but how do you know when to do it. lately LO is taking 30 minute naps but sometimes it is 45 mins (I could have written your post Ruggie. So do I go in at like 25 minutes and stir him?

Hey MGardner

Coz DS wakes at 45 min on the dot (he is very precise) I went in at 30 min when he is very still, not in REM sleep, so if your LO wakes at 30, perhaps try 25min. I think as long they are still in deep sleep (can someone confirm this for us please).
