Better naps if formula fed??
« on: August 07, 2006, 10:18:58 am »
Hi all. I've been struggling with daytime 30-45min naps for my lo since he was 6 weeks old (he's now 14 weeks old). Night time isn't a problem as he sleeps much longer stretches and only wakes for feeds. A friend has told me that formula fed babies sleep better i.e longer especially at night because of the time it takes to digest the feed. I'm exclusively bf and still want to continue bf but I'm wondering whether a combination of bf & ff would help my lo nap better during the day. Are there any mums out there who are using formula only but still struggling with these short naps? Please let me know. Thanks

Annie

Ryan was formula fed although he slept through the night at 8wks we still had a short napper . If you are happy breast feeding alone then i would carry on and there are a lot of tips on this forum to help with a short napper

Hi There,

We have had a good range of sleep problems since Sophie was born and got help from the health visitor. I asked her if they see more bottle fed babies or breast fed babies with sleep problems (Sophie was exclusively bf until 5months when she was weaned onto solids and has never had formula) and the HV said there is nothing in it, sleep problems are usually down to the babies individual character.

Also, once Sophie was eating regular solids her sleep and naps didn't get any better!

Good luck with the naps

Tried formula for the last feed hoping dd would last longer into the night. Just made her gassier  :( it's meant to stay in the tummy longer, but I really don't think that's an issue at nap times.

You've just got that nap monster on a visit. You're far from alone!!

My son's exclusively breastfed (we have introduced solids at night in the last week or so) and he sleeps GREAT at night.  Naps are a different story all together...we're seriously battling short naps and have been since he was about 10 weeks (he's 19 weeks now)  I think the whole formula babies sleep better theory comes from the fact that formula babies DO usually sleep longer stretches before a breastfed baby does, but I'm pretty sure it all evens out after about 6-8 weeks.  I've tried giving Seth cereal in the am before his first nap to see if it will extend it and so far, no luck, so we don't worry about the solids in the morning yet.  Do what works for you and what you feel comfortable with.  For me, our major incentive to keep on breastfeeding is it's FREE!!!

Hi and thanks for all your replies. I'm still happy to bf exclusively so I'll just continue doing so. And I have tried a number of techniques to extend naps e.g W2S plus swaddling etc but have hardly had any luck. So I've resorted to putting him down for many more naps in the day in the hope that things will get better as he grows older.
