how come my 11 week old used to get past 45min now can't?
« on: July 28, 2006, 21:28:43 pm »
hi there,
anybody ever experience that? My LO (11-weeks) used to take great naps, even though most posts say they don't organize daytime sleep until they are 3-6month old and all of the sudden around 9weeks and a bit he started the 45min thing. Gradually only the 3rd, then 2nd, now all naps. Anybody experienced that and has a solution on how to get past it?

HI Stacy,
here is my routine. He wakes at 5am and sucks his thumb or what ever else he is doing (he is swaddled with one hand out since he wants to suck so badly since he was 10 weeks old). Usually doesn't really call for me until 5:30 or even 5:50am.
E:5:30/5:50
E:7/7:15
A: watching me cook/make my breakfast, some playtime singing, books, etc. lots of fun, he is all smiles, when he gets restless, I move to his room and lay him onmy legs and we sing for another 10 min, I massage his forhead/face, he gets swaddled and we stand, patting his back, I lay him down at 8:30/8/45 and he is asleep within 2 min.

S:830/845 (last two days I had to wake him at

E: 10/10:15 (oh yeah, he is a fast nurser only eats for 5-10min, and he gets enough, he usually isn't even hungry at the 3hour mark)

A: playgym for 10min, on blanket by window with a teddy bear, I read to him, we play and laugh

S:11:20/11:35 up after 45min. I watch one nap, his arm that is out moves, his legs move up and down a lot, his head turns left, right, left, right,.... he than opens his eyes, sucks his thumb and is up, most of the time he is happy, if I didn't walk in or so I can here him suck on and off, and he never really fusses. I have left him in the crib awake until his next feed sometimes since he didn't cry. Rarely does unless he is overtired. I have seen you post w2s and that you should have a really dark room and if they see you game's over. His room is a loft, ie. has one open wall overlooking the family room, so there is NO WAY for me to have it pitch black.

E: 1pm
A: depending on whether I got him back to sleep or not: walk/trip to the mailbox/laying on blanket with activity cube or rattles, watching me make my sandwich.....
S: 2/2:30pm I follow his sleep cues at that point, depending how long he has been awake it's between 2hours and 1hr and 20 min.
wakes after 45min. Still happy if I walk in, never wakes crying, will not stay in crib until 4pm, will get fussy NO crying though after about 20/30min. I have held him through another 45min nap before because if he doesn't get any sleep at this point, the evening hours will be very challenging. He will not tolerate shush/pat. He goes to sleep independently and it revs him up so much, that I can forget about him going back to sleep. AND I TRIED !!!!!!!!!!! for days and days
E: 4pm
A: low key until 5:30
S: 5:30-6:15pm sometimes he needs a pacifier since he is overtired and can't find his thumb that easily with those flailing hands that they still have at 11/12 weeks :-)
A: sit in swing sometimes turned on sometimes not to watch me/or my husband and me if he is home from work yet eat dinner.
bath at 6:50pm and massage in bathroom.
E:7:10/7:15pm used to be until almost 8pm, since my breast were the only thing he had for suckling, that way he ate a LOTand lasted long stretches at night from early on. Now that he has found his thumb, he isn't all that interested in suckling on my breasts anymore and therefore is waking a little earlier at night, still a 6-hour stretch though. I tried DF, just wasn't for us. He drank so little and only extended his sleep for another hour and I stayed up 3 more, didn't give me the rest I needed. Also I do think that you are tampering with their sleep cycles if you do that, but that's just my personal oppinion.
E: 1am/2am
E: 5:15am/6am..
E:7/7:15am
...
I just don't know where to even start with w2s since he moves all of his body parts and he will see me if I stand there.

1. Oh yes, I treat 5:15am feeding as a night feeding and he does go back down until 7/7:30am. Sorry about the mix up.

2. If I go to 3 1/4 to 3&1/2 hr between feeding there will be some awake time before feeds especially with those short naps ALSO, what do I do if he wakes happy, I can hear him now, just sucking his thumb, all awake, but he is not crying so should I even attempt to put him back to sleep??? If I go in, it will make him fuss if I pick him up AND as I said shush-pat just sends him screaming.

and another thing. It seems like he can go 1hr &30min first after waking up at 7/7:30am, but then only 1hr and 20min. afterwards. You had mentioned the exact opposite and that's what I thought too. That as the day progresses and they get closer to the 3month mark they have and extended alert time towards the afternoon/early evening. He is CONFUSING me.
For 3 days I have had his morning nap 8:30/8:45 back on track and have to actually wake him for a feed. I hope that stays that way. And right now, he woke from his second, but is asleep again. I had walk in to try and get him back (luckily he can't see me), his eyes were already so drowsy that I walked straight back out). No sound from him right now. Does that mean I am back on track or is this a fluke and tomorrow it will all be back to short naps???

Hi there,
thanks for all the great advice. For 4 days I slowly had one nap after the other come back to be a full 1&1/2hour nap. Now I am back down to zero finished naps. What in the world is going on. After extending A-time he seemed to be needing the sleep and now all of the sudden he is waking early again. Not as happy as when I first posted this, but still not making it past that 45min mark again. Not even for the morning nap.

Hi, my baby experiences the same thing, she used to be a good napper and sleeper, but all the sudden after 9 weeks, she only takes 30min to 50 mins nap, and seems tired all day long, then the night time sleep becomes worse too.  Is it possible that she is experiencing a growth spout at this age?  since she wants to be fed around 3hrs now, she used to be around 3.5-4 hrs, and need 2 feeding during night (used to be just one feeding).  My baby and I had very terrible days and nights past few days, anyone can help.  By the way, she is bottle fed.

Thanks!

hello wonderful mommies,
I too have experienced all of the above mentioned situations.  I think we are on the up and up here though.  My lo is almost 4 months and we did the great naps all of a  sudden 45 min naps and not very many of them at all.  However i can send some encouragement your way.  My lo is starting to work stuff our for himself with a little help from me  He is starting to take longer naps during the day all on his own.  we have switched to the 4 hour EASY which seems to be helping.  In the beginig of our switch my routine was more EasasE.  so we got in the time just not in the right order.  A bit into it i worked on extending and well we are doing much better.  Stuff that help me get through the days when i was exhauseted and felt like giving up.  I took a good book, or my laptop in the room with me to distract me from frustration.  We are now at the place where i can calm him in his crib my patting or rubbing his back.  I also starting do situps, leg lifts and squats while patting (this took some coordination) but i  atleast felt that i was accomplishing something.  i dont know.

Now you all listen to this. Yeah, yeah, so my child sleeps great at night. Down at 8pm, once up at 4:15am for a quick feed and back asleep until 7:10am. Then this morning, after I have been keeping him up for about 1hr 45min and for a while that made him nap longer. Today, yes, listen to this. Yawn and got cranky at 8:20 (1hr 10min into the day), took him upstair, asleep by 8:28am no problem. Up at 09:06am, happy as a clam, no way was I getting him back down. So I try until 9:45am, no go, we go downstairs, easy activity... I see yawns at 10:15am, we go back upstairs, he grins and plays happily, no more tired signs. at 10:45am a yawn, well I would feed at 10:50 after 3&12/hrs, so I think, alright, let's feed and then a quick diaper change and off to bed. Of course he closes his eyes after 5min of nursing. I burp him sitting up and put him back on. He is done at 10:58am, eyes closed. I go to change his diaper, and his outfit, HE IS HAPPY AS A CLAM, WIDE AWAKE. The next yawn wasn't until 11:45am. Mind you, he got up at 9:06, and only closed his eyes for 5 min during nursing. He went down fine, no fussing no intervention needed, but I doubt I get more then 45min. How in the world did he manage to be so happy with so little sleep. Not that I mind that part, it is so much easier, however, if he was tired or cranky, I can ususally get him back to sleep.
I know he will start getting cranky later in the day, after all he got 45minutes of sleep and 2hr 40min of waketime and that's just our morning.....

well, he ended up having to be woken after 2hrs, he just went down for nap number 3 at 3:27pm, some fussing, so I know it won't be longer then 45min, but at least he did get a solid 2hr-nap in today, better then yesterday :-)
