Yet another 45 min post
« on: August 09, 2006, 03:31:46 am »
Hi,

I am out of ideas. DS is an independant napper that wont stay asleep past 45 min.
I have tried:

-leave him to settle self and he would eventually cry
-go in early and pat him as he stirrred
-PU/PD doesn't work as he doesn't like to be picked up
-W2S at 30 min, worked once and didn't work for the 3 times I tried after
-extend A time
-put him to sleep when I see his cue and not read the clock

What else can I try?

oopppss :-[

DS is 4mo. We are transiting between 3.5 - 4 hr EASY starting at 7am so our routine is somewhere in between,  E wise, he can go for 4 hours during the morning and 3.5 in the afternoon. The hard bit about his transition is the A, I am trying to extend his A time to 1.75hr from 1.5.

When he wakes, he would make little noises louder and louder until he eventually cry.
If I leave him for too long he would cry until there is nothing that I can do to calm him except for taking him out of the room.
If I get to him on the first sound and gently pat him, he would go straight back to sleep (difficulty here is I cant always get to him straight away coz I have a 21mo too).

Our settling routine is: in the room, nappy check, quick cuddle with a book or song. In the cot 1/2 swaddle, kiss and I walk out (or duck behind his cot out of view). He would roll his head from side to side and then falls asleep, often within 5 minutes. I dont understand why he cant transit to the next cycle if he put himself to sleep in the first place.

Hi,

I tend to have the same problem, but as I posted in another post, it's difficult for our lo's to sleep more than 45 min when they are only awake for 1.5 hours.  Just this past week my lo is naturally starting to stay awake longer and now sleeping longer stretches.  My lo just doesn't seem to fit into the easy plan when it comes to eating, sleeping, activity.  He has his own easy plan that is again changing this week.  Sometimes he wants to eat ever 2 hours (gulping down an 8oz bottle both times) and then other times in the day he can go 3-4 hours.  It's best to watch your baby's cues and try to guide accordingly without trying to fit him into schedule.  It's sounds like you have done a great job sleep training him already.  How much sleep is he getting at night?  Is he happy when he wakes after 45 minutes?

Hi Stacy,

Yah I agree that the feeding is tricky.  This has been a problem for us since day 1.  I took him to the doctors a couple times when he was really little cause sometimes he didn't want to eat for 6 hours, (he would scream if I tried to feed him earlier), then would want to eat every 2 hours (would scream if I didn't feed him) - I was totally lost at when he wanted to eat.  Now that he's sleeping from 6pm to 7am without a feed, I can't really expect for him not to be hungrier in the morning since he's sleeping for 13 hours without a feed.   I know he is hungry cause he's eating 8oz each time.

I personally feel that we can guide our little ones as much as possible, but the best thing is to watch their cues.

Today Cohen was awake for 2.25 hours this morning and just had an almost 2 hour nap!  Yeah!!!
