HELP! Naps are on again..off again..mostly OFF!
« on: August 06, 2006, 18:51:15 pm »
Tracy's motto of "just when you think you've got it all figured out, everything changes," is so true!!!!  Here is my problem.  My 6.5 month old has never been consistent with his napping.  We've battled the dreaded 45 min. naps, done pick up/put down, you name it.  I THOUGHT we were on the right track, as he was giving me a good 1.5-2 hour AM nap and 1 - 2 hour PM nap, but now...well, now, I don't know what the problem is.  He has been sleeping less than 1.5 hours in the AM and only 30 - 45 minutes in the PM.  He's not crying though (Thank God) and just lays there happy and playful until I go get him up.  But it just drives me insane that he's not getting the sleep that I know he needs.  When he doesn't get the "typical" 14-15 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period, it eats me up!  I beat myself up over it, but at the same time, don't know how to help him get that sleep.  Here is his routine, but of course it all varies.

wake 6:00 (has recently been getting up at 5:45 or earlier UGH!)
E 6:15 (breastfeed)
   7:15 (3T cereal)
A
S 8:30 - 10:00/10:30 (but recently less)
E 10:30 (breastfeed)
A
E 12:00 (lunch - 2.5 oz. veggies)
A
S 12:30/1:00 - ?????? (usually 30 - 45 minutes)
E 2:30/3:00 (breastfeed)
A  (ususally a catnap in here if PM nap was too short)
E 5:00 dinner (3.5 Tcereal)
A
E 6:00/6:15 (breastfeed)
S 6:30/7:00 bedtime

He has reflux and is in a reflux sling while sleeping, so it's not that he's rolling over or anything like that.  He just won't sleep long.  His nighttime sleep has been under 11 hours recently and I'm not sure why that is all of a sudden either.  Maybe I am over-reacting...I don't know, but I feel like I'm not actually giving him the tools that he needs to sleep well during his naps.  I am going back to work in a few weeks and feel stressed about him not sleeping well at home and knowing that it will be worse at daycare.  I have tried to extend his awake time - up to 3 hours and that doesn't seem to make a difference either.  My one consolation is that he's happy and healthy, but I still feel so frustrated with the situation.  I guess I just assumed he would have it all figured out by now.  Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks for the advice.  I'll try to add to the second awake time and see if that helps him to get two decent naps.

Stacy, I extended his awake time yesterday and it worked beautifully.  However, I'm not getting too excited until he actually naps well for a couple of days.  He likes to change things around just when I think he's gotten it.   :)  I was wondering though if you could post your son's feeding schedule along with the naps.  I'm not sure how to work in all of his feedings without the last two feedings being way too close together at the end of the day.  He goes to bed by 6:30 since he is up early in the AM.  If he naps until 3:30, then nurses, then has cereal at 5:00, he won't be hungry by 6:00 to nurse again before bed.  Sorry if this should be posted on a different board, but I was just curious to know how you did that with your son's schedule similar to mine.  THANKS!

Thanks again!  We're on day 3 of the new schedule and so far, so good!
