Cluster Feeding
« on: August 14, 2006, 20:52:28 pm »
Not sure if I am putting this in the right spot or not.

I started cluster feeding on Friday because I was pretty sure DS was going through his 4mth growth spurt.  Then I read that the cluster feeding can also be used to help los sleep through the night.  Once they sleep through the night, how do you then get rid of the cluster feed?????  Also, once he is sleeping through the the night should I get rid of the cluster feed first or should I try to get rid of the df first?  Below is my schedule.  DS is 4 mths, on a 4-Hour EASY, weighs a hefty 17lbs :), and is bf (I express for daytime feedings).

6am Eat (bf), Sleep, wake to go to daycare and then hopefully sleep again (this period is a ESAS but it works for us)
10am Eat (5oz), Activity
12/12:30 Sleep
2:00 Eat (5oz), Activity
4:30ish Sleep (catnap - dh picks up from daycare around 5:30)
6pm Eat, Activity
8pm Cluster feed (started Friday, I put his PJ's on right after the feed to avoid feeding to sleep).  I put him down right after I change him.
10pm DF and cross our fingers (every night he has woken up once but we have been able to put him down pretty easy)

So, he is currently still at 6 feeds.  http://www.Kellymom.com shows 5 ozs at the high range for 6 feedings and the average for 5 feedings.  Once we are ready to eliminate the cluster or the df we will up the daytime to 6 ounces.  DS has a great need to suckle and, because of this, often over-eats from the bottle so I am trying to keep him at least "on the charts" for food in-take (after he is done with whatever I instruct daycare to give, they give him a paci for a bit to satisfy his need to suckle).  If he needs more, I figure it can come from me later.  He never stops eating himself, but they say he is normally content when they take the bottle away.

Oh, two more things.  The cry the one time he wakes at night is definitely a mantra cry (I don' think he is hungry) and we have not introduced solids yet.

Lynda,

I would not stop cluster feeding or the DF once he sleeps through. If it's one or both of those that allows the sleeping, getting rid of them would only set you both back. As he gets older his needs will change and that will be the time to make changes again.
