later bedtime?
« on: August 14, 2006, 08:12:55 am »
Since ds was born he has always taken 1-2 hours to settle at night, using dummy and pat sh. firstly was due to reflux but seem to have that under control now.  He has until last couple of days been great at napping and going to sleep independently.

out typical night has looked like this

6.30pm pyjamas/bottle/winddown
7/7/30 sleep
10.45pm df
2pm wakes up (have been feeding till recently) doesn't get upset just wide awake and needs me to keep going to him to resettle every 5-15mins for over an hour
5am wakes feed naps on and off till 6.30am

more recently i have been able to give dummy at 2am and will sleep till 3.45/4am and still take ages to settle this means he doesn't need the 5am feed but still wakes early and cat naps

i don't believe it to be a calorie issue taking 5oz every 3 hrs till bedtime then a 7oz bottle and 4oz at dream feed will take a full feed afte 2am but sometimes not interested until 4am

we had a bad couple of days with naps over weekend then last night we had baby sitter who couldn't get him to sleep for more than 20 mins until we got home at 10pm we gave an early df he then woke with wind at 1am but straight back to sleep woke at 4am but fell asleep whilst i was fetching bottle till 4.30 fed went straight back to sleep until 5.30  put dummy and slept till 7am

i don't want to change his bedtime as i love having a free evening but if we get so much more sleep.  What do you think?

Up until about a week ago, my 7 month DS woke at least once, usually twice, a night looking for food. I figured it must be hunger cos it was never at the same time. However, after reading something on this site about the timing of the DF I decided to move the time I give the DF forward a half hour - so instead of 11pm he now gets it at 10.30pm. The first night I tried this he slept through to 6am - something he's never done in his life!!! He's done this every night since - the earliest he's woken was 5.30am. I reckon that the later DF was disturbing a deep sleep cycle which then messed up the rest of the night.  I don't know if this might be helpful for your situation, but perhaps it's worth experimenting with the time of the DF before you go to more drastic measures??!!!

Apologies if you've read my account of this before - I feel like telling everyone I'm so delighted!

Good luck.

Fenella, I assume you are writing about your little DS?  ;)

Like Anna says, sometimes changing something just the tiniest bit like the DF can make a huge difference. So try moving the DF to 10:30 or 10:15 and see how that works.
