Am I giving her to much milk?
« on: August 17, 2006, 08:47:46 am »
Hi

I have been reading all the topics on this site since starting weaning 1 week ago (fantastic site by the way!)  My query is - am I feeding my little one to much milk?  Here is her routine

7am - BF (both)
11am - 2 tsp of solid and 8oz formula
3pm - 8oz formula
6.15pm - b/f (both) and bed
10.30pm - dreamfeed 8oz formula

She will be starting to have solids for breakfast in the next couple of days.  Should I reduce some of her milk intake as she seems to have rather alot compared to other babies.  It will be our intention to drop the dreamfeed once she starts having breakfast.  If we do this should we  leave the other feeds as they are.  My LO is 6mths in a weeks time
Thanks

Hi Jean & Rich

I'm no expert but now 3 wks into weaning my lo. I think that sounds just fine, you need to be adding to the milk intake and not replacing it at this stage. Also, re-dreamfeed, what size is your baby, how much does she weigh and does she sleep well? I will not be dropping the dreamfeed until solids are fully established at 7-8 months as my lo will wake at night if dropped too soon. He is not the best of feeders though and it's very much a balancing act.

Hope this helps

HI

She weighs 14lb 7oz as of today - she was 6lb11oz at birth - her weight has doubled - she is wee little thing!

She is an excellent sleeper to - she goes through from 6.30ish - 6am (df at 10.30pm) - and she also naps well through the day normally about 3-4 hrs in total.

So do you think I should increase her other milk feeds if dropping the dreamfeed?
Thanks
Jean

Hi Jean
can't offer much help on the df I'm afraid as we dropped it at 9 weeks! (she has slept through since then 12 hrs)  ;D
anyway what I was going to say was that when I started weaning Sophie she was on 4 9oz bottles per day, at 7,11,3, and 7 and I thought I would have to reduce the amount of milk once I introduced 2 and then 3 meals per day. But! she did it herself (clever girl) within days of having breakfast, lunch and dinner she had cut back slightly on her milk and has settled on 7 oz at 7am and 7pm and roughly 5-6 oz at 11am and 3pm. I was still making up 9 oz bottles for the first week but was chucking loads away so reduced them to 8oz and now I only make up 7oz

Up until the age of 1 their milk is the main sourse of nutritian, and when you start weaning, these are only tasters, and that the milk is still their main meal.

At around 8/9 months your lo will give you the indication that they are ready to drop a bottle, and you could replace this then with a yogurt, cheese etc to make up the calories.

Hi there I am butting here on this one as I have a realted question! Hope you dont mind! My lo is 8 months  in 2 weeks and I have been giving him solids since 6 and a half months. I was wondering about the milk intake thing, as here in Germany they do things so differently and  I am getting a bit confused.
Is he getting enough milk with three bottles of 7 ounces plus 4 ounces in his cereal? At the moment feeding goes as follows-
7 am 7 ounces
10 am 4 ounces in cereal, mixed with some fruit
1 pm solids only- usually a vege mix and a fruit plus water
3 pm 6-7 ounces
6 pm fruit (thinking of maybe giving him some vege meat mix)
7.15 7 ounces

He is sleeping well but does wake at night once still. He settles quickly again so I tdont think it is a hunger thing. He resiists naps but only because he is too busy giggling...........or is it? btw he is a big boy of 10 plus kilos.
Thanks for any tips.x

They say that up until the age of 1 they still need to be taking a minimum of 21oz a day.  This can include milk on cereal, any dairy i.e. yogurts, cheeses etc.
