burp/spitup disrupting nap
« on: August 24, 2006, 02:23:27 am »
hi
i have another post about needing to extend nap, but i was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how i can help my ds get a decent nap without waking for a burp or spitup.  for every nap he will wake up like clockwork at the 45 minute mark and when i go in and pick him up he will either burp, spitup or both.  it seems as if he is bothered by it and that wakes him up.  i always make sure to burp him for feeds and even before he lays down for a nap, but almost every nap he will wake from this.
he MAY have reflux.  the doc gave us some medicine to give him and he HATED it so i didn't like giving it to him.  so we stopped the medicine since he doesn't have these issues at night.  before bed (or any overnight feeds-if any) i make sure to hold him upright for 20 minutes, which seems to really work.  however, during the day it is difficult to hold him upright for that long because (#1) i have a 2 year old demanding my attention too and (#2) he is awake and squirmy.  at night he is alseep so it is much easier to hold him upright over my shoulder.  does anyone have any ideas on how i can help my ds get a longer nap with being disrupted by burps?  hopefully, his naps will lengthen soon with the help of getting on track with EASY and conquering these burps!!! ::)

If you have another post in naps I won't touch on the napping issue - just the burp/spit up.

What med was it that the MD gave you to try?  Is it the gas that is most bothersome or is he vomiting alot too?  Are you BF or FF?  If FF what kind of bottles and formula do you use?  If BF are you comfortable with your latch?

You can try:
Elevating the head of the mattress.  A few books, or rolled towels under the head.
Have baby sit in a bouncer seat (not bouncing) or swing (not swinging) or carseat for 20-30 mins after eating.
Side sleeping may help (check with your MD if you are unsure about doing this).
Swaddle if baby isn't rolling and is not sleeping on tummy (not sure how old baby is).

i currently bf and bottle feed (formula).  i bf at bedtime, any over night wakeups and first thing in the morning.  the rest of the day he gets a bottle.  we use similac advance and use gerber and munchin bottles (the tilted neck kind) and munchkin nipples (where you can turn the nipple to slow flow, med flow or fast flow).  i have the nipples on slow flow.  when bf latch, seems comfortable.
we tried zantac.  i am not exactly sure if he has reflux or not. alot of times he just needs to get the burp and/or spit up out and he's better.  it seems as if he feels like something is stuck becasue he will grunt or have a certain type of cry and when i pick him up he burps/spits up and is better.  he does seem  to spit up alot sometimes.  he can't be jiggled one bit after he eats.
i will try elevating the head of his bed.
we have his 4 month checkup on monday so i am going to talk to her about this, too.
thank you!

Honestly I think talking to the doctor is the best route.  Zantac won't stop the spitting up, it does however work fairly well controlling the acid in the stomach.  If he is refluxing that acid into his throat he may do a grunt or sound as if he is clearing his throat to try and make that burning sensation go away.  This is a great website about reflux:  http://www.marci-kids.com/  Here is our reflux board:  https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=13.0  - great info there too.

i am so excited!!! ;D ;D ;D
my little guy took and hour and half nap yeaterday and today he took a 2 hour nap!!!  He is down again for his second nap so we will see how this one goes....
I propped the head of his mattress up so I am not sure if that is the ticket but it sure seems to help!!  Thanks so much for the tip!!!!!  I am also going to switch to Dr. Brown's bottles, I think those might hlep him as well with the burps and spitups.  I have a 4 oz one and I tried it out and it seems sooooo much better than what we are currently using!!
