45min napper - need help to extend
« on: August 23, 2006, 04:48:54 am »
My 4 month old has always been able to put himself to sleep, but has always struggled to go beyond 45mins.  Occassionally he will wake and have a cry and go back to sleep and occassionally he will sleep for 2 hours, but most of the time I'm trying to resettle.  I find that he only can be up for a little over an hour before he shows signs of being tired.  I have tried to cut back his stimuliation to help keep him up longer, but at this point it hasn't made much difference.

I have only just purchased the Baby Whisperer books and previously I was using another method which has the same routine, but does not help with nap issues and when things don't go by the plan, which is what I'm finding.

When he was about 3 months old he started to sleep well throught the nights, anywhere between 7 to 9 hours and occassionaly right through 7pm to 7am.  That lasted for 3 weeks, then he started waking throughout the night.  I also tried introducing a dreamfeed, but I found that he just continued to wake during the night, so never did a long stretch of sleep.

Any advise would be appreciated.

My three month old sounds the same.  He is a good boy at night but suffers from the 45 minute napping during the day - is also easy to get to sleep (self-settles).  I have also tried not to over do the activity time and it made no difference to my little one either.
I can re-settle him easily but I would love to get to the stage where he doesn't need me to intervene at all and I could rest easy knowing he will not wake at that 45 minute mark.
Hopefully someone has the answer!!!

Please check out this thread https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=69789.0 You should get support and hopefully some answers :)

I also think wake-to-sleep might help you. If you need more info on this, have a look at our FAQs section, at the top of the Naps forum

HTH :)

Thanks I tried w2s yesterday.  I went in 30 mins after he feel asleep.  It extended his nap time by 15mins to an hour, and then he woke up and I had to do PU/PD, and unfortunately I didn't get him back to sleep.

I'd count that as a success  :)

Wake to sleep takes consistency and perseverance and I think can take anything up to a week of regular use to work long term.

It does work however, so keep at it, and let us know how you get on :)
