5 week old will not nap in her crib
« on: August 24, 2006, 14:40:37 pm »
We have no problem getting Delaney to go to sleep in her crib at night. However, during the day I can't get her to stop screaming and crying when I try to put her in there to take a nap. I'm sure it's my fault because up until now she just napped downstairs wherever she was..in her swing or her bouncy chair, her car seat if we were out or we'd put her in her pack and play. Now that she's awake more often I want to start establishing "nap time" in her crib most every time she naps-but all she does is cry.

I'm at a loss as to how to get her to nap in there. She can't nap downstairs forever.  I'm at my wits end. I just tried putting her down at 9:45 and she screamed bloody murder even as I patted and sshh'd her. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore and when she had a break in the crying I picked her up. Now she's sleeping peacefully in her swing and I feel like a horrible mother because I can't get her to nap in her crib!

Part of the problem might be that we don't have a set routine at this point. I honestly have no idea how long she should be awake for after she eats- some days she stays awake for 2 hours before she falls asleep.  I really want to try and start some kind of sleep schedule with her, but I have no idea how to do it.

Basically, we get up whenever she gets up in the morning, typically around 7:00 or so. She eats and then she might spend some time under her gymani before she finally hits the swing and falls asleep. She gets up around 11:00 or so, eats again, we might have tummy time or something like that and then she goes back in her swing and so on throughout the day. Sometimes she'll sit in the swing wide awake for 45 minutes before she finally falls asleep.

I don't know if she should be awake for an hour and then I should try and put her down to sleep  or if I wait until she starts acting tired. Any suggestions?
