10 month old not sleeping through the night all of a sudden
« on: September 13, 2006, 13:20:48 pm »
My 10 month old son was sleeping through the night until about a week and a half ago, and now every night since the night is restless for the whole family. Some nights he could wake up 4 times, and other night it is practically impossible to get him to go back to sleep in his crib.  He wakes up hysterical so every night either my husband and i get him and he will settle down as soon as we hold him, but as soon as we put him back in his crib he is hysterical again. It takes us holding him for about 20 min till he is in a deep sleep before he will easily go back in his crib. We have tried letting him cry, but he just gets more and more hysterical and we don't last more than 15 min before getting him. I am at a lost on what to do, obviously getting him during the night is not solving the problem.

I'm in a similar situation with my 9 month old. Although he doesn't wake up 4 times a night, just once and it's enough, it usually takes him 45 min. to resettle. I pu\pd and rock him a little. I think we have hit the seperation anxiety phase because during the day he now can't stand having me leave a room for too long but if I'm by him, he's fine to play on his own for a long period.

I think that if it's seperation anxiety we need to just ride it out, but I wouldn't mind advice on how to deal with it in the best possible way to not pay for it later... I'll be waiting for the replies you get on this one!

interesting theory on the seperation anxiety, not sure i would of thought of that. He does tend to be really clingy when he wakes up from a nap, like he needs 45 min in my arms to relax and chill. The other thing is the last time I was at the doc they told me his molars were swollen, so I kinda passed it off as teething in the beginning, but I really don't think that is what it is.
Who I guess

Good Luck, and hopefully we will get some good replies :)

Sounds to me like separation anxiety. Probably not what you ladies want to hear!  ;)  It's a tough thing, and to some degree it has to be ridden out. It helps to give lots of reassurance during the daytime, and not set LO up for a freakout and setback, like handing him/her off to a stranger.

At night, one trick that has worked for many is to sit in a chair next to crib with your hand on them, and then slowly move the chair back a bit every night until you're out of the room.
