how long do you let them fuss before you shh/pat or pick them up in the middle of the night?

i know they are supposed to learn how to self soothe but i feel like i might be picking him up too soon -- how do they learn this and how long do you wait before getting them?

How old is your baby?

Are you able to tell the difference between a Mantra Cry (sort of whiney) versus full blown, 'I need help' cry?

If it's a newborn, they should be picked up every time they cry, no matter what time it is. :)
