Yet another reason for continued bfing!
« on: September 24, 2006, 02:58:40 am »
Just read this and found it interesting so I thought I'd pass it on...

All babies have stored iron that starts to deplete around 6 mths of age which is why most doctors recommend to begin with baby cereal for solids as it has iron added (btw cereal is HIGHLY processed). Well, I just read that 50% of the iron in breast milk is absorbed while there is only 7% absorption from formula and 4% absorption from cereal! Yippy for breast milk!!! ;D

Yeah! There was a post on here a while ago about why feeding cereal was a neccessary step for bf babies, not formula fed babies, and I knew it wasn't right! Hooray for finding that!

that's great to know...my doctor was just cautioning me on the "6 mo- lower iron" concept...  good to know she'll be just fine!
