too little naps and won't eat well
« on: October 10, 2006, 19:20:04 pm »
My baby is 3 months, and is not eating nor sleeping like he should.  A typical day is getting up at 7, eat, but by 7:30-8:00 he's tired and ready for a nap.  The problem with this is he naps for 40-60 minutes only;  so when he wakes up it's only been 2 hours since the E.  It's now become impossible to keep him on a 3 hour EASY.  (He weighed 8 lb 12 oz at birth).  When he nurses he'll only nurse for 5-10 minutes max, and lo and behold 2.5 hours later he wants to eat again.  And when he takes a bottle is 2-3 ounces max.  Which issue do I tackle first, and how do I fix this problem.  PLEASE HELP!!!

You may need to find a fix for the eating issue first - he likely won't nap well/long until he's full enough. Any physical reasons why he might not be eating much?

Sorry to hear that your LO is having a hard time eating. Why is he eating anymore after 5 or 10 minutes. Is he falling asleep, is he fussy?

My son has had a cold for a month now, which the eating thing has seemed to gotten worse since the cold.  But the nap issue has been going on for quite some time.  In fact I don't think he's ever taken 2 hour naps.  He doesn't fall asleep at the breast or anything; just after 5 or 10 minutes he refuses to eat more.

That's a long time for a cold - could he have an allergy to something like dairy (which can cause chronic congestion)?

As Marisa's mom mentioned it maybe a physical reason. Have you talked with the doctor about it?
The reason I have asked you before if he is fussy while eating, is because my daughter is very fussy and usually cries after eating. She has reflux and that  causes her discomfort and pain.

He just got medicine for a sinus infection and no he's not fussy after eating.  He'll nurse for 5-10 minutes the fuss if I try to make him eat more, but if I let him be done he's fine; and he's never thrown up after eating or anything like that.

Today I tried something new.  I was reading that the sleep cycle is 45 minutes and he might be waking after the sleep cycle and not putting himself back to bed.  So after a 45 minute nap today (which was 1.5 hours after he had eaten) I sat with him to calm him down and I realized he was still really tired.  Usually I get him up, change him, etc.  not realizing that he shouldn't be done napping.  So after calming him down I got him to sleep for another 10-15 minutes.   He was so upset from crying and overstimulated so that's why he only slept for that long.  Then when he went down for his next nap he slept for an hour, woke up, and my husband picked him up when he cried, sat with him, and got him to sleep for another half hour.  So I think I'm starting to fix the sleep thing.  And hopefully the eating thing will improve with time.  But still offer me any and all suggestions.  I still neep advice.
Thanks

I'm glad that the doctor is treating the sinus, he would probably start eating better. Have you read the Special Sleep Interview with Tracy Hogg. It address all sleeping issues.
