Dropping PM nap?
« on: October 09, 2006, 20:58:17 pm »
DD is almost 11 months old (in 1 week) and for the last 2 weeks there's been 5 days that she's refused her afternoon nap.  She just cries and cries until it's time for her to get up.  Anyhow, she's perfectly content without the nap and goes to bed easily in the evening.  She's sleeping well at night and is napping for about 1.5 hours in the morning.  I know I've read that babies usually drop their am nap first, but just wondering if maybe this is her way of telling me she doesn't need the pm nap.  Should I just go with the flow and let her lead naps???  Anybody else's babies drop pm nap before am nap?  TIA

In the long run you may find that she will get overtired without the pm nap and just on the am nap. Untimately when she makes the switch to 1 nap, you want her to take it in the afternoon so that she is not overtired by bedtime. One of the 1st signs of transitioning to 1 nap is that they refuse the pm nap so as Stacy said try shortening the am nap so that your lo is tired enough to take the pm one.

Hi there,

I am facing the same issue with my 11-month old son.  For the past 2 weeks, I have tried many different EASY combos.  The best one has been to make the am nap a little earlier (around 9:15am), and wake him up if the am nap goes beyond 90 min.  Then, he actually goes down again by 3:00.  If the am nap is any longer (or later in the day), then it is impossible to put him back down.  He will just play in the crib, then fuss and eventually cry until I pick him up.

Our experience has been that if he skips the pm nap altogether, some days, he's totally fine, but some days, he gets cranky at 5:30pm... which is then too late to put him down for a nap, and too early for bedtime...

Good luck  :)

Hey there.  I never understook the dropping the am nap thing either b/c my first ds did the same thing.  He would really resist his pm nap.  The way it ended up working out for us was that I did a catnap in the am, sometimes even in the car just to get him rested until I could make it to his pm nap (which obviously started earler then usual).  By about a week, he no longer needed the catnap and went straight to one nap and has been taking a 3 hour nap ever since.  He was just shy of a year when we did this.
