how many of your lo's take a short am nap and a long pm nap?
« on: October 14, 2006, 22:28:21 pm »
Just wondering.  Ds is a little over 5 months old and is dropping his catnap.  He seems to be falling in a pattern where he is resisting his am nap and taking a 45 minute nap and then taking a 2 to 2.5 hour afternoon nap.  Just wondering if anyone's lo's have been happy with this.  I actually like it better b/c then he can sleep longer at the same time my 2 year old is sleeping, but I wanted to make sure that it wouldn't cause problems in the future.  I have extended his A time in the am to 2.75 hours.
Thanks,
Kim

IF he is tolerating it ok then I would leave it alone.

I would leave it alone too - it will work out better this way. DD was the same and I let the 45min nap just happen, but when she dropped the morning nap it meant her afternoon nap was brought in earlier and tied in with DS who was still napping at that stage.

I was just wondering the same thing!  My LO is 3 months and we are on a 4 hour EASY which is going perfectly except....  The past few days she is waking from her morning nap after 45 minutes.  She is happy and alert.  I have tried to resettle her and do not take her out of the crib until 15 minutes before her E time.  I'm trying W2S and I have her A time at 1 hr 50 minutes (I extended it by 5 minutes).  She is still waking happy.  I am going to keep trying little adjustments to her A time and W2S to work on this.

Then for her afternoon nap she wants to take a longer nap of 2.5-3 hours.  Today she did that, took her catnap (which is usually a battle to get her to take), and went right down for bed at 7pm with no fuss.
I have accidentally let her do this twice in the past (not consecutive days--once we were out for a long car ride and once I fell asleep on the couch and slept past her wake time) with no ill effects on her nighttime sleep (she actually slept better).

I was wondering if after I try manipulating her A time and giving W2S a good trial, if this works for her, should I just leave it?  If it interferes with her night sleep I will definitely nip it in the bud!

Well, Luca is still getting up at night.  He eats around 11 and then around 4 and 5 which I guess is normal for his age.  Although I really wish he would sleep through the night!  But it was no different when his naps were of equal length.  He also is waking happy from his first nap so I think I will just see how it goes.  My first ds always did the opposite, a long am nap and a long pm nap.  I tried to change it, but it never happened so I just let it go and he was fine.  Tracy says in her book that spirited lo's will take a short am nap and a long pm nap and touch babies do the opposite.

My LO does the same...df at 11 and wakes around 3-4 am!  I think she must be a bit spirited but on the quiz she comes out angel!
