4 months and short naps
« on: October 13, 2006, 21:58:38 pm »
Hello,
My second ds is on the feed (approx 10 -20min), wake approx 1.5 -2 hrs, and sleep (approx 30 -45min).  He rarely goes into the next sleep cycle on his own.  Sometimes I can get him to sleep for an additional 1.5 hr if I go and hold a soother in his mouth for 20 minutes.  This is not an easy position to stay in.  I have tried letting him cry it out but he won't go back to sleep.  If I get him up, he is yawning and tired.  He feeds every three hours and sometimes 2.5 hrs.  He sleeps through the night from last feeding at 10:45pm - 7:30ish am so that part is okay.  Any suggestions.  When he wakes up so early I can't stay on the feed, wake, sleep cycle. Wakeing early results in a wake, feed, wake, sleep cycle for the day.  What to do?

Hi!  I know this sounds weird, but can you switch to a 4 hour feeding schedule and just stick with it?  I did that, and it helped sleeping.  I read about it in Tracy's book.  I still don't quite understand why it works, but it did for me.  Does he fall asleep without the paci?  I just wondered b/c if he can't, you might need to wean it to get him to transition on his own.  There is lots of great info on weaning pacis on this website.  I can find it if you need me to.  I defintely think you shouldn't let him cry it out.  That tends to make the situation worse.  Have you tried shh/pat?

By the way, we usually don't fit perfectly into the EAS routine, but it's ok.  Ours is more EASA.  That is perfectly fine.

I would do anything I could to get him to sleep longer b/c then his body will get used to it.  I actually rocked mine if nothing else would work.  Last resort of course because of accidental parenting.

Are you familiar with shh/pat and pick up put down?

Hope this helps.

:)

Hi there, have you tried swaddling your LO to help him get past the 30 minute sleep cycle? We swaddled Molly quite tightly and it helped her get over the "jolt".
Please do not let him CIO, in letting him cry it out as this young age, you are breaking his trust and creating way more issues then just not sleeping well.
Good luck, hopefully you will find something that works, sounds like you are right on track with having him on a great schedule!  ;D

HI,
I've never responded on this web site so I am not sure if I am doing it right.
So please bear with me.
Thanks for your feed back, maybe I will try the 4 hour feeding schedule.  I am waiting for my Baby Whisperer book in the mail as I just recently ordered it.  So, I am not yet familiar with the shh/ pat method or the pu/pd method.  My ds rarely goes to sleep with a paci.  He only seems to need it mid nap.  Can you explain to me the 4 hour schedule a little better so I don't mess it up.  I wonder if maybe I keep him up to long after his feeding.  I don't see him rub his eyes or pull on his ears but when he starts yawning I put him to bed.  He sleeps between the triangle wedges and I tuck in the blankets.  He is rolling over onto his tummy but still hates his tummy, so if he doesn't have the wedges he'll be rolling over and getting frustrated.
