engorgement when dd sleeps through night?
« on: November 01, 2006, 20:38:27 pm »
My DD just slept through the night twice.  I am very excited, but am very engorged in the AM.  Will that go away on it's own or is there something I need to do.  My shirt is soaked in the AM and got some on sheets.  So far, I haven't had to pump it off for her to latch on.  I actually squirt it in her mouth if I am too big for her.  Then she latches on.  Seems to work o.k. so far.  I assume this happens to everyone at first.  Am I wrong?

Sounds pretty normal--I used to have to get up and pump some if dd went more than an hour past what my body was used to because I was so uncomfortable I couldn't sleep anyway.  your body will adjust, and if you don't have to pump, it will probably happen even faster because by pumping, you actually encourage your body to keep up the supply to that level.  I always tried to only take off enough to get comfortable again.  Nothing like waking up with boobs as hard as sharp rocks!!!!!!!

Congratulations! Yes, you will adjust in a few days. I would agree that if you can manage without pumping then don't do anything differently (except perhaps get one of those rubbery under sheet thingies).

The joys of supply and demand.  ;)  Although not everyone as leaking issues, it's still definitely normal.  Hope your body regulates soon.  :)

I had the same problem, took ages to adjust and now night is not a problem. A product that might help is Avent Comfort Breast Shells. You would have to wear a bra to bed to keep them in but they collect the milk and keep your clothes off the breast. They could help while you're adjusting.

Doesn't half hurt a bit till he's fed. I seem to leak all over the place generally but loads now that he's started sleeping though (which is just brilliant!), plenty of breastpads in a sleep bra & a towel under the bedsheet helps though. Also a hot shower tends to trigger the one that's not been emptied down to a more comfortable level. Glad to hear it should subside a bit & I'm not the only one.
