6 week nap dilemma
« on: November 08, 2006, 15:17:14 pm »
My baby has never had a hard time taking 1-2 hour naps during the day in between his every 2.5-3.5 hour feedings until yesterday. Now he cannot be put in his crib for longer than 5 mins without hysterical crying.

Today I spend an hour with him by his crib trying to calm him down. I can tell he's very sleepy because when I pick him up he falls asleep immediately in my arms but within 2 mins of me putting him in the crib he starts to cry like something is hurting him.

He is not hungry because I just fed him and he's not rooting. After an hour of this torture, I finally put him in his bouncy chair and he seems to have fallen asleep. I don't like for him to fall asleeep in the chair because his naps are not as long and he wakes up still tired.

Thanks for your help!

Could he be overtired? Does he show any signs of reflux - hence why he might sleep better upright?

I don't think he has reflux because at night he sleeps alright in his crib.
I thought he maybe overtired but now I've been putting him down after a diaper change and it's the same story.

His 3 hour schedule looks like this:
Eats - 30 to 45 mins
Diaper change and play - 15min
Nap - he cries 15min to 1 hour and sleeps the remainder of the time until his next feeding. He wakes himself up for his next feeding but is still tired, sleepy and very cranky.
He is at his worst in the morning and the rest of the day we play catch up.

I've tried pacifier, putting him on his side, white noise, rocking him in his bassinet, swaddling but in the end it's the crying that wears him out to finally fall asleep.

Do you think it's possible that he's had a growth spurt, and is able to handle a little more awake time now? Perhaps he is not tired enough when you go to put him to bed?
Caroline :)
