pleeeeaaaaase help
« on: November 09, 2006, 02:31:19 am »
my bub will not take along nap! i have tried putting him down at 3, 3.5, 4.5, and 5hrs. too early he wont nap
and later he will only nap for 40min-1hr.as it is he is barely making a 6:3o bedtime. I just dont know what to do. Should I push him past 5hrs? This seems to be my only option. Has anyone gone through this? What is the magic number???????????

PS
Any advice, suggestions and/or previous experience greatly appreciated. :-[

I went through the exact same thing...dd would not nap longer than 45 minutes (if we were even lucky enough to get a nap).  I tried playing with her awake times, and when 5 hours had passed and she still wasn't napping, I knew we had a problem.  I don't know how your baby sleeps, you didn't mention if sleeps independently or if you have to put him to sleep, but in my case, we did pu pd for her, and she started sleeping on her own.  Initially, it was still short naps, but she learned to sleep for longer stretches on her own.  I hope this helps.

Hi Luchi! Thanks for your response. So you lo didnt even sleep longer after 5hrs! Oh my! I am so afraid to push him beyond 5. Gage does sleep independently and has since he was about 4 mths (thank goodness!). Anyway, he does sleep 12+ hrs at night because he is so tired. I am just at my whits end.

Alice,

Sorry you are still having a hard time with naps. Does Gage show tired signs? How long does he take to fall asleep if you put him down after 5hrs? Could you try an extra 15mins at a time to extend the awake time perhaps he needs just that little bit longer than 5hrs???

Hi Natasha! He goes down for his nap fine (knock on wood) and falls asleep within 5-15 min. He doesnt really show tired signs. Somtimes he rubs his eyes but that is before bedtime usually. The funny thing is he is not even crabby, even after only having an hour of sleep the WHOLE day. I just know that will change sooner or later. He has had a hand full of naps over 2hrs, but I cant find that special circumstance. Tomorrow I will stretch him past 5hr, and I will cross my fingers. It just seems wrong though. Who knows maybe I have a super baby who can take it.

Hasn't he always been able to handle a longer awake time in the morning? My DD is the opposite she is lucky to get to 5hrs awake time in the morning but can handle 5.5hrs awake time easily in the afternoon before bed.

Sorry you're still having problems Alice.  For quite some time now I've stuck to a set time for Zander's nap rather than an amount of awake time.  When we first switched to 1 nap it was around 12 and now it's 12.45/1.

So Zander is doing 5+ hrs....hmm.... well I guess it could make sense for Gage to stay up too as he had been at 5hrs for awhile. In fact we were doing Tracey's method of the transition for quite some time, but I got nervous and pulled back. I think I have to first catch him up on his sleep some how as I think he is becoming waaaay overtired. He woke up at 6:10 this morning..... it is getting earlier everyday.

Hi Gemmah! I just saw your post. My bub is 14mths and we have been moving to one nap for awhile now. Our routine looks like this:

7:00 ish wake (although it was around 6am today)
9:30-10 try for a catnap of 30 min. He has only taken this 2x out of 6
12:00 nap for 1 hr
6:30 bedtime He wont sleep unless he has 5hrs before bed.

You could always give it a go keeping him up longer and see how Gage handles it.  I think I've mentioned this before but if you're unsure whether he can handle it a walk of an hour or so early morning (I mean about 9.30 so not that early!) will help him to reserve some energy and it'll probably be too early for him to actually nod off.  Zander is actually up closer to 5.5-6 hours in the morning and only 4 hours in the afternoon.  I've found since we moved the nap later in the day he hasn't ever woken (not for good anyway!) before 7am because he's never too tired at bedtime.
