super night sleeper, but terrible napper
« on: November 12, 2006, 04:03:19 am »
DD used to be on such a perfect 4 hour easy.  now, not so much.  she just doesn't want to sleep long at all during the day.  i mean like 2-3 20-45 minute naps and that's it.

but- she'll go down at 7 and wake at 8:30- she's a super sleeper at night, but barely sleep a wink during the day (much too interested in the world to miss anything by sleeping)

is this ok?  should I encourage a more rounded sleeping habit?  i mean, she's totally happy even with those tiny naps.  her feeding is all on schedule, just not her naps.  and she's sleeping so long at night!

thanks~ bethann

I'm in the "if it's not broke, don't fix it camp" on this one.  However, have you tried sticking to just 2 naps and extending her A times?  Maybe that will help her extend her naps?

Is she falling asleep indpendently?  How old is she?

A worst case scenario would be that she's actually overly tired and is so wound up that she's masking sleepy signs--if that were the case over time it could led to disrupted night sleep.

she's 8 mo. and has been falling asleep indepentantly since 3 mo.  however, lately there have been a few night wakings which due to some accidental parenting have led to some nurse to sleep incidents.

i'll try the only two naps.  when do you cut out the morning nap- btw?

If you're doing three naps the first to go is the evening cat nap.  The morning nap usually goes sometime around 1 year or later, leaving just one early afternoon nap.

If you add up the hours of sleep she's getting, it seems like plenty, and if she's happy on such short naps, personally, I wouldn't sweat the situation too much, but I'm pretty go with the flow. Others may see it differently.

that's what i've been doing- and she has been happy on just the little naps.  i'll try to cut out the catnap- although that's the one that she seems to really need.  she would sleep for an hour or more if i let her.  i'll work it out.  thanks!
