Think naps are messing up nighttime sleep- 10 month old
« on: November 11, 2006, 10:13:45 am »
hi there
DD has always been a really good sleeper, both at night and for naps. However things have gone a bit wonky this past week and I think I need to mess about with her naps but would welcome some advice.......
Firstly, her normal routine prior to this week looked like this:
6.30 am  wake
9.30 am sleep
11 am  wake
2.15pm  sleep
3.45pm  wake
7pm bedtime

About 10 days ago she suddenly decided that she was going to go from 3.25 to 4 hours A time between 1st & 2nd nap. This has pushed her pm nap later and later. She will still go to bed happily at her usual time but has been waking around 5.45  every morning this week  :(
Also the last 3 nights she has woken on several occasions- not so much that I've needed to go in but I can hear her fidgeting and having a bit of a moan before she sucks her thumb to go back off. This is very rare for her- usually once she's down I don't hear a peep until morning.
This waking both during the night and early morning is definitely not due to hunger, or being too cold/ hot so my only conclusion is that she is having too much daytime sleep now for her age. I think I have read here that she is around the age where I have to start shortening her am nap as she won't necessarily do it herself. Should I start waking her after 1 hour in the morning? And if so how soon before she starts sleeping better?
Any advice would be appreciated!
thanks
kathryn

hiya! could it be teething? My DS is going through similar thing, altho needs me to go in at night ::) and i can only attribute it to this as I know hes not any other the others (hungry, hot , cold etc). I do think perhaps its worth a shot with shortening the am nap tho, many find that its is an extension of nightime sleep so if shes having a long am nap, she wont need as much nightsleep. Try it for a few days and see hoe it goes! good luck

hi there
thanks for your thoughts. Is not teething as we have just come through a 3 week bout which finished last weekend when teeth nos 5 & 6 finally appeared!
I did wake her after 1 hr 10 mins this morning (meant to wake her after 1 hour but chickened out and hovered outside her door for 10 mins before finally going in  ::)) so we'll see what happens later, I guess.....
