45 Minute Napper - Aarrgh!! (Move to Support forum above?)
« on: November 13, 2006, 09:30:54 am »
My baby is terrible for the 30-40 minute naps.  I just cannot seem to get it right, I have tried W2S and he still wakes up, I assume at 3 months he is too young for PU/PD, and I shush/pat till I am exhausted.  He went down for his nap at 7.30am and woke at 8am, and it took me until 9am before he went back to sleep.

DH cant be bothered with all this so I have to pretty much go it alone, and its so stressful.

Please someone tell me it gets better!!

Hey there...
ok...i'm right with you...unfortunately my 10 week old has been doing this for the last 6 weeks. No idea if it gets better (not to be a downer)...I tried everything too but nothing is working...
Quick question - any idea how long a 10 week old can stay awake before they get truly ready for a nap? Maybe we are putting them down too early? (if thats a case then all they need is a catnap to feel refreshed)....
I'm clueless right now :(

Hi Kin, my lo is tired after only being awake an hour.  As soon as I see him yawn, I then start the wind down process.  We close the curtains, and TV/everything is switched off so it is quiet, then gradually I swaddle him, as his eyes get heavier I carry him up to his crib, and spend a few minutes holding him.  Then before he actually falls asleep I put him in his crib and stand by him ssshh-ing him, and as he is falling asleep I quietly leave the room, then he is fast asleep.  He just keeps waking up 40 minutes later!!   ::)

Hi Jazmyn and Kin,

This is all new to me too.  From what I understand your LO shouldn't be awake for more than 2 hours max at a time (including wind down etc).  Anything longer than this and they are likely to get overtired.

I have a 4.5 month old who rarely sleeps more than 45 minutes, and can only stay awake for an hour at a time.  I have been trying W2S to extend but it hasn't worked yet, as well I have been trying to extend her A time which hasn't resulted in longer naps yet.  But this is all new so I am willing to give it time!

If all else fails I believe they sort their naps out themselves by about 6 months!  Good luck!

I'm in the same boat, ladies... my 4 month old refuses to nap more than 45 minutes EVER.  But, she can only stay up for between 1 and 1.5 hours, TOPS.   So, instead of taking 2, 2-hour naps, she takes 4, 45-minute naps during the day.  I've given up trying to shhh/pat or PU/PD for her naps because she just WILL NOT go back down.  But, according to Tracy's 2nd book, as long as your little one is happy and content while s/he's awake, you don't need to worry about longer naps.

I hope it gets better when she hits 6 months, but we'll see!

Best wishes!
