What's going on?!?
« on: December 08, 2006, 02:50:47 am »
I'm not sure what has been going on with my dd's naps lately.  They are all over the place.  I read that toddlers that are learning to walk tend to have disrupted sleep aptterns until walking is well established.  Is there any truth to this?  Anyone with personal experience on this one?
My dd (13 months) used to sleep from 6:40 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. and then go down for her first nap at 8:45-9:00ish.  She would then sleep for about an hour or an hour and a half and then go down for her second nap at 1:00ish and sleep until about 3:00.
Lately, however, she has been waking at night - probably 2-3 times a night (which is not like her) - and napping poorly.  Her naps lately have been anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 1/2 hours.  She seems to be awake and talking in her crib for over an hour before she actually falls asleep.  She yawns and shows signs of being tired so I put her down for her nap and then she proceeds to talk for over an hour.  What's the deal?  Do you think she might be transitioning from two naps to one?  Should I then keep her up a little longer in the morning even though she is yawning and showing signs of being tired?  What about missing the window?

Today is a good example of poor sleeping:
She woke up at 6:00 a.m. this morning (earlier than usual) and talked in her crib until I went to get her at 6:45.  She was then tired and yawning by 8:30, so I put her down.  She talked in her crib until about 10:00 and then slept for 15 minutes.  She went down for second nap at 12:40 (Again, yawning and showing signs of being tired) and talked in her crib until 2:30. She then slept for 2 hours and 25 minutes.  This is typical of what has been happening lately.

Any help/suggestions/advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks in advance,

We went through a difficult time around that age. Primarily because of teething and also because Riley began to transition to one nap. I knew it was time because in our case, his morning nap got longer, resisted the pm nap and bedtime, had more nightwakings and got up earlier. For a long time we were in that frustrating stage where one nap was not enough and two naps were impossible to get. On those days I offered a catnap in the morning and an early bedtime. Over time, it has evened out and now at 16 months, our schedule is as follows :

7-8: wake
12-2 or 3: nap
7-8: bed

It has been that way for the last month or so, I'd say. There is a thread about the 2-1 nap switch,, you may want to look over that for ideas. HTH a little
