Gassy 9 week old can't get past 40 minute for naps, HELP!
« on: December 18, 2006, 06:08:00 am »
HI I'm new to this board. I'm desperate for help. My daughter is 9 weeks old. First month slept like a champ, slept on her own for hours at a time. At 4 weeks we tried starting the EASY and getting her to sleep on her own as she no longer was. First couple weeks weren't bad. But then she started taking longer to go to sleep and began short naps 20-45 min. As I have a 22 month old, my time is split and it got to be too much trying to get her to sleep on her own leaving the toddler in front of tv for hours. So then I started to do anything to get her to sleep- accidentally parenting I know. Still using Sh/Pat to soothe her. Sometimes it can take over an hour to put her down, to have her get up 20-45 min later and then start all over again! I've tried wake to sleep with little success. Every now and then she'll fall asleep on her own miraculously. By the end of the day of these short naps, she's so overtired it takes hours to put her down at bedtime, anywhere from 2-4 hours of walking, rocking, anything. At night she's pretty good, wakes up at 2ish and 5ish for feeds and goes right back. Because she's been falling asleep anywhere from 9-11pm, I wake her up at 7:30 so that she knows its morning. My husband and I are at our wits end, I spend all day just putting her to sleep. Usually the first nap she sleeps longer, I think its because she goes to sleep so late, its part of her "night". What am I doing wrong? I'm unable to stick strictly to 3 hours easy because she's also very gassy and spits up lots. So I end up feeding her at different intervals to compensate, also sometimes she's so fussy after the short nap, I feed her because as a last resort to calm her. I'm getting better at reading her sleepy signs which I think I didn't really look for instead using the clock. What can I do? Help!!

Luna

We are having the same problems here with our 13 week old and have been for a few weeks now.  I also have another dd so find it really hard to spend hours trying to get dd2 off to sleep.  Actually, getting her off isn't great but its trying to get her back off after her 30 min naps that takes more time.  I'm afraid I haven't got any answers as I had this with dd1 and because I had lots of time to pat/shush I at least got it so I could put her down and leave the room and she would sleep, however, short naps continued til she was about 4.5 months and then suddenly started to get longer!!  I am soooo hoping for that to happen again as am so fed up of trying to keep her awake til her next feed time and then she has to go straight down - was trying to follow EASY but have no chance with such short naps.  She is grizzling now in her swing and have 20 mins before feed so will probably have to feed early like I end up doing lots.

Good luck - I hope things improve for you soon, don't think there is any magic solution when you haven't got all day to devote to just one lo unfortunately, you just have to do the best you can.
