Is my amount of milk ok
« on: December 24, 2006, 17:26:23 pm »
hi

baby is now 5.1/2 months breast feeding and eating 3 meals a day now.  She is not putting on a lot of weight, she is only 13.02.  2 oz gain last week.  Today I did a yeild before feed to see how much I got.  I pumped 5 oz in total (both breasts) Baby always has both.

I bf about 7 times a day still, 7 11, 2.30, 5, 7, 11, 3, and give solid food at 9am, 1 am and 4 pm.   Baby feeds will from breast at most feeds.

I think she should be getting enough.  Please can I have some views.

I personally don't find the yield a good indicator. I fed Riley successfully but struggled to pump much. If you are pumping 5 ounces, it is safe to say you have a good enough supply for your baby. If you are concerned about weight gain, you really should concentrate on more nursing and less solids. She is eating three meals where most lo's are not having any now. There is way more calories and nutrition in bm. I am going to pop over to solids to see if you have posted there before.

Has your lo always been petite and is she following a consistent growth curve?

hi

thank you for your reply.

Baby was born on the 91% line and is now on the 9%line but as a family we are all very small.   I am 5.2, dh is 5.6, my sister is 4.11, dad is 5. and mum 5.3.

I have two other girls, one is tall but my 3 year old is on the 2% line.  Hv said to give 3 meals.

It does sound okay to me - my ped was always okay as long as there was consistent weigh gain. Caeden was and still is on the smaller end of the scale and as long as he was gaining there were no concerns.
I wouldn't trust the "yield" either, pumping almost always produces less then the baby will get. Is she nursing just as well after solids as she does if she doesn't have solids? That would be my only concern in 3 solids meals a day at this age. I would try and put solids either in between 2 feeds or after nursing not before. It sounds to me like your milk supply is fine and I would be more concerned about her getting all the milk then some solids at this age.

Is she happy and content? This is the best indicator if she is getting enough food over all!

hi

thank you for your reply, baby is a very happy baby and content my problem is she does not sleep well at night, up 2/3 times and low weight gain.

she does love her solids and is eating a lot for her age (2 girl was the same but much smaller. 12 pounds at 6 months)

bf is about about 4 tsps of cerel
lunch and dinner is 4 cubes of veg plus 2 cubes of fruit.   I know this is a lot for her age but she would eat even more!!

Just a word of caution - I don't want to change what you are comfortable with, but often times too much solids before they are old enough will cause "indestigion" and sometimes that is what is waking them up at night. Not the hunger factor but digestive woos because of an immature system. Maybe try just breakfast and lunch with solids and offer more milk in the evenings and see how she does.
Or cut back to just cereal at night and do the fruit and veggies during the day.
I would also offer both breasts when nursing and see if that helps.

If she is happy - slow weight gain is truely not a huge concern.  :-* :-* It's hard not worry as mamas though!  ;)
