Can a rash with no other symptoms be an allergy
« on: January 17, 2007, 19:16:55 pm »
I have posted awhile back regarding a sunburn like rash that dd has on her bottom. It has been there now for a few mths. Dr. believes it was a Yeast infection and gave me cream. I have been using the cream for 1 mth and the rash improves 1 day and then the next its worse than ever. The Dr. believe that this is a yeast infection because there are not other symptoms at all
Can you have a rash and no other symptoms and still it be an allergy or an intolerance to food?

The cream that I have is an anti-fungal mixed with a barrier so its not a straight anti-fungal, but I know that anti-fungal creams thins out the skin.
I live in a city where 1 in 4 don't have a DR so getting to see another one will be a problem. I can always go to a walk-in clinic, but I have concerns about that, but it might be my only option. The problem with walk-ins is that if you have a reg DR and its not an emergency they really dont want to see you
Do you know other concerns of using a cream  for that long?
I tried to call the Dr today, but couldn't get through.
Its just a weird rash in that she is fine, it does not bug her, it comes and goes. She has not other symptoms at all. When it goes it only goes for maybe a day and then comes back full force. I have not seen a clear bum for more than 1 day since end of October.

When my dd had a yeast infection it bothered her. A LOT.  It did come and go during treatment but eventually went away.  Maybe it's a sensitivity to the diaper??? Have you tried changing the brand or type?  Just a thought.

I haven't tried, but that is a good thought. I should maybe try different wipes as well. I use papmers senstive and cruisers.
When you dd had a yeast infection, did it look like a sunburn between her bum? My dd's looks like someone took a  big red rubber stamp to ger bum as mentioned sometimes bright red sometimes not.
How long did yours last?
If this was an allergy to a food and not a yeast infection, would there be other symptoms? Would the rash bother dd? Could this really be nothing?

Is it like a red ring around the anus? That is one of the telltale allergy signs. Riley gets it when he drinks milk, yoghurt is okay though. Even when I was exclusively nursing, if I ate too much dairy, he would get it. He also had a snotty nose, excema, general crabbiness...

yes its like a ring that is coloured in if that makes sense, but if there are not other signs, could it be an allergy?

I would  ask your doctor for sure. Let me see if I can find some info about it, and if I can, I will post it here for you. I can picture what you are talking about, it was when you said in a pp about it looking like a "big red rubber stamp" that I thought of Riley's rash. Be back soon...

Thanks! I did ask the Dr. I said this really looks like an allergy rash and she said yes it does, but also looks like a yeast rash and then proceeded to ask me if dd has any other problems, vomitting, diarrhea, sleeping etc. and she doesn't at all so the DR said it was a yeast rash. I even said to her, Should I come back if this does not go away and she said "It will" and I said if it doesn't how long should I give it and again she said "It will" so that was the end of the conversation. You know how some Dr's can be, they are ALWAYS right. the thing is I really like her and I feel that she knows what she is talking about, but not in this case, BTW she is not a pediatrician...couldn't get one without a referral

Not exactly what I was hoping to find, but quite good to read. There is also a photo of a yeast rash in there which looks nothing like the rash I think you are talking about. I will try to find more, but have a read of that anyway.

Riley's first doctor sounds a lot like your lo's doctor. We have since switched as I found it impossible to have a 2-way converstaion with her. Where do youlive that you need a referral for a ped? I never heard of that before!

Thanks to both of you. Very helpful.
It kind of looks like a bad diaper rash more than a yeast infectionm but I really don't know. I am going to see if I can get my lo in the Dr tomorrow again and if she does not provide me what I am looking for I think I will just ask for a referral. She will be upset I am sure, but she cannot reject  me of this request.
I live in Ontario, Canada. I don't belive that this is the norm not to have a ped in Ontario, but in my city it is due to the shortage of Dr's.

My newborn came home with a raging diaper rash which made my doctor suspect food allergies (my older son has 13 food allergies).  So, a diaper rash can be a sign of allergies.  Also, with my older son, he had a terrible rash under his chins (he had a couple) and the doctor kept calling it a yeast infection and giving me antifungal creams and it never got better and I thought it was eczema so I started to use hydrocortisone cream and it cleared up instantly.  Maybe try this on your little ones fanny and also keep a good barrier on his skin to protect it from dirty diapers.  Good luck!

My friends son (he is older than your LO) saw his doctor Tuesday as he had a rash but no other symptoms and she was told he had had an allergic reaction to something that he had eaten or something she has changed for washing him in or washing his clothes in. She has changed the soap power and his soap back to the ones she used before the rash appeared and is using the cream the doctor perscribed for the rash and so far their is no improvement so she is now going to look at the foods he has eaten over the past 2 weeks to see if he has tried anything new at school and the new things she has given him. So yes you can have an allergic reaction to something and only have a rash. Sorry about the babbling on I just like to fully put across my opinion
