Dropped to 3 bottles and finishing 9oz's
« on: January 07, 2007, 21:52:44 pm »
Hi everyone,

Dominic is 9 and a bit months old and dropped to 3 bottles a day just before Christmas which he did himself and seemed very happy with. I think he had a growth spurt the week between Christmas and new year as he was having loads of food and up to 6 bottles a day (and night) but we are over that now and for the last couple of days he's been back to 3 bottles and no night wakings.

Anyway...when he went to 3 bottles I was giving 3 x 8oz bottles but with the growth spurt I moved to 9oz bottles and he was, and is finishing every one. I tried topping the bottle up at the end, but it seemed to put him off and he wouldn't drink anymore. I tried giving him 3oz and then topping the bottle back up to 9oz but that just really upset him when the 3oz was gone and he went on strike after that and it took about 3 hours for him to drink anymore.

I know as a rule that if a baby drains a bottle they need more but wasn't sure a) how to do that when my bottles are (Avent) 9oz ones and he won't take a top up, and b) because of his age and as he is sleeping through is 27oz a day enough? Dominic eats well and has cereal with cows milk for breakfast and maybe 1 or 2 yogurts a day so I am happy he is getting enough calcium.

Any advice much appreciated

Sal to top a bottle up you can (if he won't accept mid feed top up);

1.give it in another bottle once he has finished the 1st
2.give the remainder in a sippy (if he takes it)
3.For bedtime give some before and after his bath

It is hard too say if 27oz is enough per day at this age because LO eat so much varied solids that also contain calcium, etc.  If he is sleeping through I would use that as an indicator.

Tracy says during growth spurts to try and stop any night feeds you can give milk more frequently during the day.

My DD was on 27 OZ at 9 months...  I would also give her calcium through cheese and yoghurts...  She is now 12 months and drinks 18OZ.  My Dr is extremely happy with her nutrition and weight gain.
