how to keep newborn awake during feed?
« on: January 10, 2007, 15:35:04 pm »
Okay, my little guy keeps falling asleep while nursing.  Sometimes he'll only go for 10 minutes and no matter what I try- I can't get him to wake up and keep feeding.  Any suggestions?  I didn't bf my 1st child because of delivery complications.  I am so excited to be able to do so this time, but I don't want to create a snacker.  He is only 12 days old, but this is new to me...

He's gaining like crazy!  He's already 4 oz. over his birth weight and the pediatrician thought that was great.

Thanks!
Alison

I have seen on the babywhisperer program that stroking their hand helps with this... or was it face?! Someone please clarify, it was a long time ago! I vaguely remember that stroking the face wasnt such a good idea but cant remember why and even if thats what they said!!

Sorry  :-\

I don't know what the BW program suggested because unfortunately it never aired where I live.  :( My DS had jaundice and had to be nursed every two hours and it was always tough to wake him and keep him awake. My Lactation Consultant, hospital nurse and pediatrician all suggested stripping him down to his diaper to eat and also changing his diaper between switching from the first breast to the second breast.  If these don't work, a cool wet washcloth lightly stroked on the forehead and feet. I know that may sound harsh, but sometimes that was the only way I could keep my LO up to eat.

Another suggestion to get better feeds that I received from another mom is from Dr. Sears. He suggests feeding baby with skin to skin contact.  In other words, baby in a diaper and mom topless.  I don't know how well that will work for you since you have another child to tend to but I have to tell you, my LO did nurse much better when we were skin to skin and also, it is just a very precious feeling to hold your wee one next to your skin like that.

There are a few tips in this FAQ:

However if nothing works - don't panic about the snacking thing just now. Have a look at this FAQ too:

You've got some big growth spurts to come - often one around 2 weeks and it's important to follow his cues to build up your supply. Plus 10 minutes can be a full feed for some babies - remember quantity of milk is very small and so is their teeny stomach!

Weight gain is great - you're obviously doing well - and that would suggest he is reaching the fattier hindmilk in these 10 minute feeds.
