How much to feed at night?
« on: January 24, 2007, 13:05:27 pm »
My 3.5M is on 3HR EASY, has a 7PM bedtime, a 11PM DF, and a 7am wakeup.  When things are going well (suffering from short naps currently), she wakes once around 4-5AM for a feed.  I am a little concerned because her 4 am feed is the best feed of the day (during daylight hours, she usually comes on and off alot, looks around alot, etc) - she eats for about 25min with singleminded purpose, and usually takes both breasts.  I'm not concerned about the amount she is eating overall, but should I try to limit how much I give her at night so she will eat more/better during the day?  I am torn between feeding her enough so that I don't have to get up again before 7, and wanting her to get most of her calories during the day.

How old is your child? 3.5M
What’s his/her daily routine? 3HR EASY
What’s nap routine? 1.5hr from waking, battling 45min naps
How long are naps? 45min, occasional 1.5hr
What's bedtime routine? Time? Feed, Bath, Feed, Story, Bed
Do you bottle or breastfed?? BF
How much? or how long? 15-20 min, unusually bobs on and off during day feeds
If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed) One side if she's not fussing, will switch sides if she doesn't seem happy with the other
How many wakes per night? 1 on a good night, 3 on a not so good
What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up? steady whining cry, if before 4 will usually self soothe, if need intervention and not fed, back to sleep in 5 min
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry? Only if getting upset, will leave before asleep if back to mantra cry or quiet but awake
What have you tried to settle??  will shh/pat if upset, leave when awake (being awake at night for long periods of time not really an issue)
What do you do for A time and how long is it? 1.5hr from wakeup including eating(battling short naps) Bouncy chair, sit and talk with mum, tummy time, back time
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? N
Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months) N
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? N paci weaned at 13W
Do they have a lovie? N

No. She clearly needs that feed so you don't want to limit it. She's still young for that. As she gets older she will be less easily distracted during the day.

Thanks...  I don't think I was in danger of trying to cut her back any time soon - I'm just getting used to getting sleep between 4:30 and 7 and wouldn't want to risk her getting hungry and waking up again... but sometimes I start overanalyzing her eating.

It's hard not to overanalyze sometimes! But don't worry, you're doing great.
