27 month old waking one day at 5:15 the next at 6:15???
« on: January 16, 2007, 17:51:43 pm »
Okay, our 27 month old switched to a big boy bed, upstairs 2 months ago and then weaned from the paci for slumber about one month ago.  Here is my question...one morning he will sleep to his past usual of 6:20 or so and then for several days he will wake up at 5:15/5:30/5:45.  He is all over the place.  Of course, the early wakings are more frequent.  He doesn't jump out of the bed, but he screams for us while sitting up.  If we try to go in and tell him it is too early and still ni-ni time, he freaks out and says no mommy, I waked up.  He naps between 12 and 12:30 each day for about 2 hours, but this can sometimes vary in length.  He goes to a home daycare provider during the week.  I teach.  He sleeps around other children so it depends how they all nap as well.  We put him in bed between 7 and 7:30.  He fights the idea on the way upstairs, but does usually fall asleep son after.  Any ideas at the inconsistency.  I guess all together he is getting between 12-14 hours which looks like the norm, but it just seems odd that some days he sleeps later and others he gets up earlier.  We have always had a bedtime routine, etc...  If we go up and then leave while he is still upset, sometimes he will yell, cry and then get quiet for a few minutes, but then is up again.  Any suggestions or should we just roll with it?

Have you noticed a pattern?  I would write everything down every day for a week.  Naps, mealtimes, bedtimes, wakeup times and see if you can work out a pattern.  Perhaps he wakes early if he hasn't had a long enough nap or something.  Also, does he pooh in the mornings (odd question I know, sorry)  But if Alex wakes early and I can't put it down to naps or late bedtime, then guaranteed she will pooh within half an hour!  I think a tummy ache might wake her.

Funny...no he usually doens't pooh until after breakfast.  I teach so he goes to a home daycare.  I have kept an eye on his nap schedule there and honestly I haven't seen a pattern between his nap length and morning wake times.  I will say that his average nap is 2 hours now, but occasionally he will sleep 3 like he used to.  We eat dinner at the same time every evening and start the bedtime routine at the same time as well.  I have always been a huge schedule person.  I am very type A.  That's why this is throwing me.  Should we be getting him right up or trying to FIGHT to keep him down longer.  I have been rereading the BW books to get ready for baby #2 and saw an error in our routine.  We give him a sippy with milk when he wakes and we bring him downstairs, while he watches Cailou.  This shouldn't be our problem though, because we have done this FOREVER!!

My dd is also 27 months and for some time now there has been a lot of variability in her sleep, both naps and night.  some days she will skip a nap (not often thankfully) other days she'll nap no problem for 2 hours, others she won't sleep until very late and then only for 1 hour.  The most variability has been with night sleep though--both sleep times and wake times.   I haven't been able to really find a pattern.  I think the variability comes a bit with the age--I think for a lot of lo's this age they are entering the phase where the nap is starting to get a bit "soft",  but rather than the nap alone being effected it also impacts night sleep.  I have set a type of "minimum  limits" rule and I don't tinker with my lo's sleep too much provided she gets at least 10 hours at night and 1 hour during the day (she is spirited and has always slept about 1 hour less than average)--anything less than that I move sleep and nap times forward by at lest 30 minutes (if no nap, bedtime is  at least 1 hour early).  I think at this age there is bound to be some variability, and we just have to go with it, but staying vigilant to signs of overtiredness.  so for the early wakeups, I'd let him stay in bed doing walk in walk out until the usual time that you get him  so that the "get up" time is the same every day as well.

Thank you for the response.  I agree that he seems to be getting enough sleep so I hate to mess to much with it.  I thought about trying the wake to sleep method, since I get up to workout an hour before he wakes anyway, but wasn't sure if he is too old for that.

I doubt that wake to sleep would work as the wakings are different times, it needs to be the same time.
