Just turned 1 and now we are having naps issues =(
« on: January 17, 2007, 21:59:42 pm »
Hi,

I need some help!!!!!

My DS just turned 1 and we've been having nap issues for the past 2 weeks.  Is it common for a 1 year olds to resist taking their naps?  Previously, DS was taking 2 naps about 1.5hrs each.  We didn't have any problems in the past putting LO down for his naps....there may have been a couple of times where it took longer to get him down but he normally would take his naps.

I've tried Shh/Pat, PU/PD, WI/WO, and letting him CIO.  I've even tried giving him some milk to try to get him to be sleepy on a full stomache.
Is this just a phase?  Or is my LO starting to go from 2 naps to 1?
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Mel

Hi Mel
my dd also just turned 1 and we have had to tweak her naps too. Our routine now looks like this:
6.30am wake
9.30am sleep 30-45 mins
10-10.15 wake
2pm sleep 90 mins
3.30pm wake
7pm bed

It took a few weeks of tweaking to settle on this routine, during which time we had early wakings as she was having too much daytime sleep. I tried shortening the am nap to 1 hour (was 90 mins like yours), then 45 mins and finally we are having usually 30- 40 mins. I have to wake her from both naps otherwise she would just go on sleeping for god knows how long!

Thanks for the advice.  I guess my LO has been getting too much sleep and not enought wake time.

Update:  DS won't go down for 2 naps....he's been doing 1 really long nap (about 2 hrs)....is this normal?  Should I wake him up sooner? Usually we wake up about 730-800am and his bed time is about the same 730-800pm.  DS has been able to stay up for about 6 hours without napping and I've tried to get him to take a short nap but he just won't nap.

TIA

if he is doing 1 long nap then he is probably not tired enough for a 2nd nap.
have you tried limiting the am nap?

I've tried limiting his am nap to 45 min but then he won't take a pm nap.  And I've had a few days where he won't nap in the mornings but will take a 45 min afternoon nap.  I've even had one day where he only took a 15 min nap  :(  I think he's starting to transition to 1 nap since he won't do 2 naps and his 1 nap is getting to be close to 2 hours now.

Hi girls. We are in the same boat as you. My DS started this a couple weeks ago. He also turned 1 on the 10th. He has never been a really good napper so when we started to do the 1 nap I was in my glory w/ a 2 hr. nap. But that has all caught up with us now he is extremely overtired w/ frequent night wakings that last for hrs. So now I am trying to fix this. I've been reading in toddler sleep and the 2 to 1 nap switch which has been very helpful. Keep your fingers crossed for me that it won't take that long to iron out and good luck w/ your LO's.
