Afternoon spacs...
« on: January 20, 2007, 03:00:12 am »
Hi there ladies!

Has been ages since I have posted so here goes.  My nearly 11 month old dd has always been a great sleeper since we used shush pat to teach her to fall asleep on her own at two months.  She is currently taking two naps during the day first one usually around 9-9.30am and second one around 1-1.30pm.  She usually sleeps between 1-1.5hrs which she does with little fuss and all by herself.

In the last week we have noticed that she has been having a lot of trouble going to sleep in the afternoon.  We look for tired signs (usually rubbing her eyes) and we wind down like usual and put her into her cot.  This is then followed by at least 4omins of crying, wailing, standing in cot etc..  :'(

She is still great with taking her morning nap so does this mean that she is ready to switch to just one nap?  I'm a bit hesistant as she is one that needs to have her A time extended very slowly because if overtired she really struggles.

Any advice appreciated!

Thanks,   :) Sam..

Before you make the switch to 1 nap their are a few things you could try first:

Making the afternoon nap a little later say around 2/2.30pm she may not be tired enough at the usual time anymore.
Or shorten the morning nap to 30-45mins to allow for a better afternoon nap.

Hi there!

Thanks for replying so quickly...

If I take her afternoon nap later should I still try and extend even if she is getting tired?  I seem to get the tired signs then try to put her down and she just loses it.  Usually she is awake 3 hrs in the morning before her nap and 3.5hrs in the afternoon before she goes down.  I worry about making her morning nap shorter that she will then get overtired waiting for the second nap or it won't work at all and I will have two terrible naps!.  Am I thinking to much?  Sorry!

My DD didn't like having her AM na shorten at this age either so i end up excepting her long nap in the morning 1.5hrs and 45min nap in the afternoon before we made the switch to 1 nap.
This was our routine at 10/11months:
7am - Wake
10am - Nap 1.5hrs
2.30pm - Nap 45mins
7pm - Bedtime.

Before that she was napping at 9.30am for 1.5hrs and 2pm for 1-1.5hrs.
