I am really starting to loose it!!!
« on: January 19, 2007, 13:41:47 pm »
Ds is 13months old,and we just flew from Australia back to Spain 2.5 weeks. It took about 5 days for him to change his body clock to the time here, all done now. While we were in Aus he had no set times for sleeps,so it is kind of starting new right now,but I cant get him into any kind of routine and it is really starting to drive me nuts.

To make matters worse now,DH was meant to go from Aus to America for work,so of course house is still a mess with un packing and he tells me today he will be here in Spain on Wednesday.

I have no idea on how to get DS into a good sleeping pattern, doesn't seem to matter what I do,every day is different. He wakes up at a different time every morning, normally before the 7am I am trying to get him to.I put him down later at night time to try and get him to 7am,he wakes up earlier.During the day time,if I pout him down for a sleep in the morning,be it 20mins or 2hours thats it for the rest of the day and if i try for one sleep at 12noon,1-1.5hrs max out of him.You can tell he is really tired, cause he is really cranky.

I am really getting at my wits end on what to do with him?

He is cutting teeth now,but he has been cutting teeth for the last 4 months and he has never had any trouble with his day or night time sleeps before. He normally cuts more than one tooth at a time too.

I am desperate for some help please??

Andrea...

I reckon he's ready for only one sleep a day.  Also, the later you put them down, the earlier they wake up, I don't think its till they are about 2.5 that the concept of a 'lie in' works for their bodies.

I think its in the solves all your problems book but I think Tracey suggests a way of starting from scratch and that's what I'd do if I were you, with a little bit of flexibility here and there.  So I think I would say 6:30 am was the earliest wake up (and work on getting this later, once you are sorted).  Before this, it would be that awful thing for you of getting up, telling him its the middle of the night and leaving again.  Keep doing it til 6:30 and if possible have a light that comes on on a timer that shows its 6.30.

Then decide on a late morning or early morning nap whichever you think would suit best and just work on that then bedtime at 6:30 pm and just stick it out for say 5 days and see where you are at.

{{{hugs}}} Andrea

Yup!!  Sounds like you need to start extending his morning A time to try and reach to lunch time ish, for the transistion period you may find you need to give lunch before the nap (so he doesn't wake hungry) or some lunch before and after his nap.

What is your routine like at the moment?

Today we managed to have one sleep of 2.5hrs.
He was up at 6.15am(not to happy with that been i am sick and couldn't get to sleep until 1am)

He has no problem staying up until lunch time,it is getting to him sleep a good time.

Today we did
6.15am awake
11.15am attempt on lunch which he wouldn't eat so ended up only having yogurt
11.30am went to sleep
12noon woke up,took out of bed changed bum and then he stayed asleep until 2pm

And I am trying to get him to stay up until at least 7.30pm.

I did cheat a but, when we just did the flight the doctor gave me some medicine to help him sleep,so I gave him some of that.

2morrow I will try the same thing, but not sure if I should try and put his sleep time to 11.45am?what do you think?

Thanks
Andrea

When Calum was transistioning we extended him from 1030/45 to 1115/30 at the start, we slowly started extending that to 1200 / 1230.

I remember at the start we tried to give him lunch at 1115 before his nap at but he sometimes was too tired and ended up rubbing food in his face and eyes ::)  Like you I would offer him custard or yogurt then his meal when he woke.

It does take time Andrea, but distration is the key to try and extend his morning A time, you may find temporarily that his bedtime is brought forward, but you cab extebd that again when the nap settles down.

I hope you enjoyed your trip.  ;)

He went down at 6.30am tonight,so hopefully today might be the start of getting him going good.

He has the top 2 moloars coming thru, and also had a cold too,so hopefully once they are thru with things will look up.

Trip was really good, didnt want to come back as was meant to spend this month and next month alone, but have gone to having 2months alone to having DH arriving on Wednesday and BIL arriving on Saturday,so ahve a busy week.

Thanks for the advice,I didnt go bonkers today so it is a start.

Thanks
Andrea...

Well the start was good, but the rest has gone bad.

He woke up with a temp today,so he went down at 9.30am for 2hours.He did eat some banana&apple which he hasn't eaten since he was sick when we flew in October.

So back at square one 2morrow i think...

No good so far Lauren,But DS,DD and myself is sick and today we had doctors apt at lunch time.

He did have 1 hr at 10.11am when I had to wake him up and also from 1.30pm-2.45pm and went down at 6.30pm.
I think I might have to wait until he gets better,he has to go back the doctors on Thursday to see if he is any better.

Hopefully we all start getting better soon, then get started going good with one sleep a day.

Thanks
Andrea...
