Sleep issues at MIL's
« on: March 08, 2007, 10:29:14 am »
Hi Girls,

My DS has just made the switch to 2 naps. He has 3 hours in the morning and then about 1 1/2 hrs in the afternoon.

The only problem is Thursdays when my MIL has him from 1.30 - 5.30. He never gets the right amount of sleep at the right time.  ::). Its not because she doesn't try, its just he won't sleep when he's there. They have a travel cot / play pen thingy that they try to put him down in but he cries every time, so ends up sleeping on MIL but only for about 30 mins. I don't mind her holding him but I can't expect her to do it for 90 mins!

He slept in the travel cot once for an hour when we there for Christmas but I think that was because DH put him in there and not MIL?

He used to sleep in his pram as we have one of the Jane prams that lies flat but he has outgrown it, and we have been trying the travel cot for almost 3 months now. I feel mean when I leave because I know they'll both dread nap time. I know its only one nap a week I have issues with, but as we all know recovering and getting back on track can go on until way into the next day.

There are feeding issues when he's there too but I'll post them somewhere else.

Thanks for ANY input.
Loube

I think your ds is not used to having someone else other then you and DH put him to sleep. My dd used to do it with dh; I was the only one that could put her to bed. Its a habit or trust/security issue.

Is MIL doing the same routine as you at home? Is the environment similar?

Try having your MIL with you at home on the weekends and put ds to put together, then after a few times, be in the room but have MIL put ds to sleep while you sit close by. Then have MIL put him to bed without you in the room.

Does your ds understand star charts yet? Or any form of reward/incentive? You can use that when he does sleep in the travel cot and make a big deal about it.

HTH.
Cheers,

Catharine

I would love MIL to come over and see how we do things BW style, but she's not that bothered as its only for one day! I suppose I'll just have to take the same approach :-\
