is my 4 mo old ready to transition?
« on: February 12, 2007, 05:06:36 am »
Hi, I've been reading some of the posts about signs that they're ready to transition, and I wondering if I could get some advice. Here is a typical schedule for my lo. (just turned 4 months).

8am - wake and bf shortly after
9/9:30 - nap (lately it's been longer 1-2 hrs)
11a - bf
12:30 - nap (usually just under an hour)
2p - bf
3:30 - nap (sometimes can extend to 1.5+ hrs)
5p - bf
6/6:30 - catnap (< hr)
7/7:30 - bf
8/8:30 - bed
10:30p - dreamfeed

He is roughly on this schedule every day but over the past few days has taken some much longer naps (today - slept from 4:45p - 6:45p) and some much shorter naps. Also he has been waking up from some naps crying hard like as if he's had a bad dream or something. Also tonight I put him to bed around 8:15p and he woke just over an hour later crying and totally awake, but then I re-swaddle and gave soother and he fell back asleep.

Also last night he woke around 4:30am, I gave him the soother and fell back asleep for abit, then woke again just before 6am so I just fed him cause I was so tired. He didn't have that much though but was totally awake, but I just put him back in his crib and he slept till 9am. Then after his morning feed he slept from 9:15-11am, he doesn't usually nap for that long.

So as you can see his routine has been off lately so I'm wondering what I can do to get it back on track. I have tried keeping him up longer but he can really only last 1.5 hrs or 2 at the very most, and at this time he is usually cranky and really ready for a nap. I have also tried just waiting longer to feed him past the 3 hr mark and he can't really do this, he just starts acting really hungry. The only time he can really go longer than 3 hrs in b/w feeds is if he has a longer than normal nap, then wakes and it's been over 3 hrs.

I am also wondering about giving up the dreamfeed, cause I wonder if this is screwing up his night sleeping?

Thanks in advance for your help!

To me is sounds like your DS is going through a growth spurt.  My DS used to be like this when going through a growth spurt, he just wanted to eat and sleep.

Have you had a look at this link to see if you think your lo may be ready to transistion.

If you think your lo may be ready to transition, you can always try the 3.5 hour first and see how that goes.  You could try and extend his A time by about 10-15 minutes every few days.
