Help with naps!!!
« on: February 03, 2007, 17:59:51 pm »
Hello, my DD is 11 month now, and I'm not sure if its too early to switch from 2 naps to 1.  Lately she naps well in the morning but she doesn't want to nap in the afternoon, and in fact if she does nap for 1.5 hrs, which would be the usual, when its night time she won't sleep at her usual hour, she would cry and cry until she ends up crwling and playing again for 2 more hours when she after a second bath she can sleep with no problems.

Her usual routine is
E 7 am breakfast
A
E 9 30 am bottle
S 10 am 1.5 hrs nap

E 12 pm lunch
A
S 1 pm

We did exactly what Stacy suggests at 11 months- started off by shortening the am nap to 1 hour, then after a month to 45 mins. She now has 30 mins in the morning (I have to wake her) but has always still had a good pm nap and then goes to bed just fine.

Thank you everyone for getting back to me, I thought this message was not posted since my dd had deleted it from my computer, I guess she posted it for me and I had not finished it yet, But I got the answer I needed.  I'll try 1 hour am nap and I let you all know how it goes. Thank you, thank you!!!!

curious, how long after 30 min n ap is your pm nap?  Just interested, as every toddler seems to handle different amounts
Hi Stacy
She usually is back in bed 3h 45 m after waking and falls asleep within 5-10 mins. Her longest A time has always been that one in the middle of the day- she only usually does around 3h15 before bedtime. Some days I will let her have a 40 min am nap, depending on what time she woke and what we are up to that day, but never more than 40 mins as if she goes into 2nd sleep cycle she is hard to wake and then we inevitably get early wakings the next morning!  :P

So, I tried a 1 hour am nap, but it has been impossible to get her to do her pm nap. I have tried PU/PD, but all of a sudden seems as if she was not tired at all (even though she fusses and scratches her eyes).  She is just skipping her pm nap and going to bed at 6 pm.  It seems fine since she is not waking in the middle of the night and it has not been difficult to put her down to bed at night, she falls asleep on her own and sleeps 12 straight hours, some days even a little more.  So here is my concern, how many hours should she be sleeping at night for her age, 11.5 months.  I donīt know if she might not be taking her pm nap, because she feels well rested because of too much sleep during the night.
I just donīt want this to become an issue when she gets older.
