berries for 8mo? other fruits to mix with cereal/yoghurt?
« on: March 31, 2007, 11:13:28 am »
hi,

my ds is 8mo & is on 3 solid meals a day eating meat, fruit, veg, toast, pasta, cheese & yoghurt. just wondering if it's okay for him to eat strawberries & raspberries? i haven't seen any berries on my baby foods list so was wondering about them.

currently, ds eats apples, pears, nectarines, peaches, and bananas... what other fruits are good for a baby his age? any suggestions for what fruits to mix with his cereal and/or yoghurt?

thanks in advance!

I think there was something on this before.
And im pretty sure some other mums were saying it was ok from about this age{8 months}
But I was always told to wait untill 1 year because of seeds.
So I would wait and see what others say before taking any notice of my reply.
samantha,mum to all.

I think it would be fine; if you are worried about allergies give the berries a quick steam before you puree them; that removes most of the risk. As for the seeds; never worried about that myself.....

dd is classed as high risk for allergies due to family medical history, so we were told after about 8 months the only things still to avoid were nuts until age 3 and strawberries until age 12m.
I would try mango chunks, melon bits, plums (although they can be a bit sharp- steaming first helps with that) also dd's favourites are blueberries- they are a superfood so very good for lo's! (they are a different berry family to strawberries so are ok)
If there is no history of allergies in the family then I would guess it's ok to try other berries but I don't know for sure.

hi ladies,

thanks for your replies! :) my husband & i don't have allergies but i have asthma in my family so might wait until 12mo before trying strawberries & raspberries.

kathryn, thanks for the tips r.e. fruits to mix with cereal & yoghurt! i think stone fruits are starting to go out of season now but i'll give melon & blueberries a try. actually tried mango today for the first time mixed in ds' yoghurt. i thought it tasted divine but he was less than impressed ::) on the other hand, he loves brocolli mixed with sweet potato which i find quite  :-X

dh has asthma and I have eczema and that's why they told us 12 months for strawberries so it's probably a good idea to hold off x
