Flying with a toddler!!
« on: February 20, 2007, 18:34:53 pm »
Hi,

I didn't really know where to post this.

Myself, my Husband and my Son (he will be 23 months) are flying to Australia next month.

We fly out at 6.15pm and land in Singapore at 2.00pm(ish) and then fly out at 20.40pm and land in Sydney at 7.15am.  I'm hoping that the night flights will help our son to settle.  Does anybody have any tips to help us?  I'm not looking forward to the flights, so if anyone could help, that would be great!

Thanks
Emigrated from the UK to Australia 1st July 2009!!

I never had such a long flight, but I have traveled quite a bit with mine- 4.5 yo and 18 months. I've used a portable DVD player with lots of DVDs, playdough, new sticker books, magnet, leap frog books. And LOTS of snacks. And ear plugs for fellow passengers!! ::) Perhaps a new toy that you think he will absolutely ADORE that will be very quiet to play with? An d best of luck!

When we just flew to the US (we got home last week) our boys surprised us and were wonderful. We had the A330 which was lovely and had our own tv's with lots of movies for us and the kids. There was even nickleodeon on there.
With Theo we just let him do what he wanted and he slept when he wanted. So he had lots of shorter naps as opposed to his 1 nap of 2 hrs.  Harvey however we could not get to have a decent sleep until the last flight (3 in total) when he was so exhausted because he woke at 1am to leave for the airport and didn't sleep until almost 1am our time. He did have like 2 naps of about 20 mins but that really was all.  Then his last nap was for about 1 hr, but he doesn't nap at home no longer.
They both fell straight into the timezone, but then it was night time in Utah by the time we got there.

See if you can get seats behind the Galley as they had more leg room which allowed H & T to walk around a little in front of G and I.
We took too many things to entertain them on the plane because we thought we would need them. Infact the time went pretty fast and we didn't use any of the things we took.

http://www.seatguru.com/   shows you the layouts and seats of all planes.

Also, just a nice thing is, ask the cabin crew if they do the 1st wings for your child (if its your childs first flight) as they may get a badge and certificate for a keepsake.

I'm lurking too...flying march 14th cross country with horrible lay overs....
I like the sticker book idea.
I'm also going to try to find some kind of velcro toy...he seems to really like that.
HAving same problem as Stacy witht he dvds though, even though we're trying to teach him to like TV for the sake of the flight! LOL...
