When to go in?! Help.
« on: March 07, 2007, 15:25:10 pm »
I have a 4 1/2 month old boy who has been on EASY for at least 6 weeks.  It is incredible and I absolutely love it (and incidentally buy the book for every new mom I know).  I am doing my best trying to transition to the 4 hour routine and have been working at extending his naps for about 2 weeks now.  Before we worked on this, he would wake up at 45 mins screaming bloody murder.  Now, he wakes up at 45 mins and talks.  Every so often he puts himself back to sleep.  My question is ...when do I go in to help him out?  If I go in immediately when he wakes up and give him the pacifier, he'll fall immediately back to sleep.  But I'm trying not to do that because I want him to learn on his own.  He is swaddled so he cannot reach the pacifier by himself.  Lately, I have been waiting for 15 mins after I hear his first peep to see if he falls back to sleep.  If he doesn't fall asleep after the 15 mins, I go in and insert pacifier and he falls right back to sleep.  Please advise - thanks!

Sounds like you are doing the right thing here. I usually waited up to about 15-20mins if my DD wasn't crying after waking 45mins. IF she was crying i would go in straight away and use Shh/Patt to get her through to the next sleep cycle.

Thanks!  One more quick thing.  At 45 mins or 60 mins, should refrain from giving him the pacifier.  I guess my question is should I be doing shhh-pat and not using the pacifier (as you can see, it's very important to me that he's an independent sleeper!)

That's a good question.  The shh/pat has worked with LO, although often in conjunction with the pacifier. He will be up from his nap at about 11:30 -- I think I'll try it for the 1:30 -- I'll keep you posted.

Perhaps you need to modify the Shh/Patt is it the Shh or Patt her doesn't like?

I use to turn DD on her side facing away from me and patt her on the back and shh at the same time. When she stopped crying and started drifting off  i would shh softer until stopping all together. Then after that i would slow down the patting until i just had my hand softly on her back. Then i would take it away and stand next to the cot for up to 5mins until i could see she was in a deep sleep (breathing getting heavier) i would slowly make my way out the room.

He turns around, looks at me and gets hysterical. It feels like CIO with me standing next to him. I then resort to picking him up, but not always even then does he settle down. I am really heading for a nervous breakdown with these 45 minute naps which i can't extend.
