Help w/Naps that suddenly got short
« on: March 16, 2007, 21:40:42 pm »
Enzo is 4 months old, and he's in EASY since he was born. Until 2 weeks ago, I would say he's a text-book baby...
There goes his routine: wakes up around 8am, eats (I'm breastfeeding exclusively), then he goes directly to crib and sleeps for another 2,5 hours. Around 11am he eats again, then we start activity, he's in a very good mood, plays 30 min or so, goes to bed again - used to sleep for 1,5 hour now he's down to 40 min at most. But he doesn't wake up in good mood, looks like he's still tired, but I can't get him to sleep again. I lay him in my bed, or on the floor, we do some talking, and I try not to stimulate him too much (when I leave him alone, he cries).  Then he eats again around 2pm, takes his bath, goes to bed (there's no activity here because he is really tired and often finishes the bath crying). Used to take a 2 hours nap, but this one is also down to 40 min at most. Again I try to stay low-profile, don't play much. He eats again around 6pm, usually finishes very tired for the same reason, and I try to get him to sleep - but this is the worst nap in the day! He cries a lot, I have to do some Pu/Pd, get out and in the room several times, do some pat-shus... Usually takes him 30 minutes to fall sleep, sometimes more... The other 2 naps sometimes are easy, sometimes are hard, depending if I can read him correctly and therefore have the correct timing... This has always been a 30-40 minute nap, and when he wakes up, he is in his worst mood in the day, since he was 2 months old...
When he gets the right sleep (in the night and when his naps take more than 1h), he is really a good-mood boy... Wakes up smiling and talking to himself, stays alone in bed w/his toys... I would say he is a text-book baby... But when he doesn't get the right sleep, I think he becames a sensible baby...!

So, I would like some help to understand why have his 2 first naps shortened, and also get some help with his 6pm nap - why is is always this dificult?!?!

He hasn't had any development change lately... the only thing I've noticed is that he is starting to ask for more attention - sometimes cries when I leave the room, uses his charm to be picked up from crib, stroller and whatever...

Tks in advance!!!!!

OK, tks.
What is confusing me is that he really seems tired... but even so the naps take only 40 minutes. And another thing is that he wakes up in a bad mood, what sugests that he is still tired...

So how do I move to 4h EASY ???

This is so typical of that age.  My lo was doing this for a month or so. 40 minute naps I mean.  I had to extend his activity time which didnt really help the naps it was just one of those things, but eventually he sorted himself out.

TO move to a 4 hour EASY you start by gradually increasing time between feeds.  When I did it I moved it at 10 minutes to start with then gradually increased it until he was eating 4 hourly.  To be honest he did it himself anyway.

Good luck.
