I have a tummy sleeper and she's a great sleeper.  I don't know if that says anything about "better" or not.

Mine doesn't seem to prefer belly over back. She'll go back and forth... not sure if its made any difference on how well she sleeps though

Well E almost always sleeps on his back or side and has since he was very little.  B on the other hand is usually on his stomach, or more accurately his cheek/shoulders/knees.  Both of mine are very good sleepers too (knock wood) ;D

Theo sleeps mostly on his tummy and so did Harvey at a younger age.  I am a tummy sleepr and waked all the time through the night.

I think everyone is different.  One thing I do know, when they are able to move, they are better off being given enough room to move and find their own position that they will sleep more comfortably in.  If I am out and about Alex will sleep for about half an hour - one hour in her buggy, but in her cot she will sleep 2 and a half hours.  Same goes for the baby I care for.

Mine definitely started sleeping better once he was on his tummy.  But he had reflux as a young infant and this really helped relieve that, so I don't know if tummy sleeping would make a difference for all babies/toddlers.

I'm not sure if there is any truth to it for babies but for toddlers I say myth--I have 2 dd's as different as night and day in nearly every respect.  Both start on their backs and move to their sides--at age 2 my older dd slept 14 hours; my younger 11.5, in a day.

The difference--temperment--angel/textbook vs. spirited.

Myth :) While many do sleep better on their Tummies, its no more then those who sleep on there back or side. It all depends on how each child feels comfortable.

It is true however, that most adults still sleep in the same possition as they did as a child.  ;D
