What cereal to use?
« on: March 29, 2007, 03:36:41 am »
If I get the o.k. from the doc, I'm going to start my little guy on cereal. I was looking at the choices and I'm a little
confused. I read somewhere that you should only use one grain cereal to avoid an allergy. Don't know if that's an issue, but why are there are so many to pick from?

What's the difference between the multigrain rice, single grain rice, whole grain rice, oatmeal, barley, whole wheat????? Boy-oh-boy! Do you get the banana flavored or the plain? Is one brand is better than the other? Health food brand or good old fashioned Gerbers? Too many choices for me!  :P Need some mommy input.

Thanks for helping.

Tami

Hi Tami,

Usually you stick with just one ingredient at a time, so that if they have a reaction, you know what it is from. Once you have tried them all in isolation, you should be okay to ry the mixed grain.

How old is your baby?

I was told from the nurse at our health centre to start with single grain. The order in which to offer should be rice, barley, oat, then wheat. I would't bother with mixed fruit cereal as you can add your own fresh fruit after you determine that there isn't any allergy with the grain :)
