Techniques for Extending Naps

What methods are you using to extend naps?

My DS #1 was a textbook baby, he never met a nap he didn't like. DS #2 has decided that he will skip yawning and go straight to zonking out. I can lay him down in his crib awake and he will self soothe or I can put him down with the wind down ritual (for about 5-10 mins), either way he will only sleep 45 mins before he decides to wake up crying. I go in and put the paci back in and he lays in there for about 7 mins before he spits it out to cry again.
He is 7 weeks old, on the 3.5 hr schedule (5-6 oz per feeding), (he is a big baby, 9 lbs at birth) and he takes a paci. His activity time lasts about 1- 1.5 hrs (including feeding). I also use the miracle blanket to swaddle.
I have some questions if anyone can help me:

1. What methods should I be using to extend his naps, the wind down ritual at the beginning doesn't seem to extend them.
- What I have tried:  Shush/patting, white noise, turning off white noise
2. Should I stop picking him up and shush/patting when he wakes up at the 45 min mark and try to shush pat him  in his crib?
3. Is there something else I should be doing/not doing?

The Wake to Sleep isnt working at nite for us, he gets a bath at 7:15 and put to bed immediately afterwards. He is dream fed at 10:30 and consistently wakes at 2:30. At this point, I am going in and picking him up and shush patting for 10 mins or so, putting him back in his crib which triggers him to awake every 10 mins until I break down and feed him, which is around 3 but he is only taking 4 oz so he isnt too hungry, I know he could make it to 4 am if he could just sleep.

4. What should I be doing differently?

Last nite was nite #2 of attempting to wake to sleep at 1:30. This simply triggers him to wake up at 2:15 instead of 2:30.

I am open to any suggestions, my textbook first baby spoiled me!

Their is some great info in the FAQS section on extending naps.
As for waking at night he is probably hungry as it isn't uncommon for them to wake at night at this age for a feed.

Hi Natasha,

I checked out the FAQ's before I posted, they refered me to this link:  http://www.babywhisperer.com/forum/how-tracy-helped-josie-and-her-family-get-past-45-min-naps-vt649.html
but it is no longer valid.

Can you tell me how to get this information?

Thanks,
Summer

Hi there,
I just read your post, and something caught my eye: are you doing sh/pat in your arms??? I believe it should be done in the crib.
