Nearly 9mo - shorter naps
« on: March 30, 2007, 01:31:42 am »
My ds has been taking 1.5hr naps twice a day with 3hr awake time.  His naps are now shorter 1-1.25hrs and I am wondering if this is an indication that awake time needs to be a wee bit longer?

5am-6am Wake & Play in cot
6.30am Breakfast
8.00am Bottle
8.50am Put Down
9.00am Asleep - 1.25hrs

10.15am Up & play
11.30am Lunch
12.30pm Bottle
1.05pm Put Down
1.15pm Asleep - 1.25hrs - last couple of days has taken up to 40mins to settle in - not crying just playing/talking.

2.30pm Up & play
3pm snack
4.30pm Dinner
5pm Bath
5.15pm Bottle
5.30pm Put down
5.45pm Asleep - last night took 1/2hr to settle - again not crying.

We have been having 1-2 night waking episodes over the last few weeks (initially due to teething, then ear infection & cold) however he should be fine as antibiotics finished a few days ago & cold has gone.
He has woken around the 1.5hrs after going down for the night - I have always assumed that this is overtiredness sign - wakes crying hard - so dummy & reassure - usually falls asleep again quickly.

Has then woken randomly usually only once during the night, could be 11pm or 3am - usually settles with dummy again, however last night woke at 3.30am & took over an hour to resettle - playing - which I assume is overtiredness?

Today tired putting down for first nap at 2hrs 40min in the morning & took 15-20mins to go to sleep.
This afternoon put down at 3hr mark, took over 40mins to settle (not crying) & only napped for 45mins, woke up happy.

So could it be that he needs more awake time to get in a good nap, which will take care of the overtiredness in the early evening?  Bit confused - I tend to go on awake time & cues - probably more towards time over cues.

Can you please advise how your day works when adding over 3hrs of awake time to keep a 11-12hr night?

Thanks

Try pushing that second nap a little later perhaps try a 3.5hr awake time if he can handle it. You have put 5-6 wake up is it closer to 5 or 6am? Need to know so i can help you establish a routine.
Any new milestone happen lately?
